The BMW '''N73''' is a naturally aspirated V12 petrol engine which replaced the BMW M73 and was produced from 2003–2016. It was used in the BMW 7 Series (E65) and Rolls-Royce Phantom VII.
The N73 was the world's first production V12 engine to use gasoline direct injection.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.usautoparts.net/bmw/engines/12cyl.htm |title=BMW World- 12-Cylinder Enginges |website=www.usautoparts.net |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130627010021/http://www.usautoparts.net/bmw/engines/12cyl.htm |archive-date=27 June 2013}}</ref>
Compared with its M73 predecessor, the N73 has dual overhead camshafts, double-VANOS (variable valve timing) and valvetronic (variable valve lift).<ref>{{cite web|title=BMW 760Li 2002 - Detroit Auto Show|url=http://www.caranddriver.com/news/bmw-760li-auto-shows|website=www.caranddriver.com|date=January 2002 |access-date=7 August 2017|archive-date=7 August 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170807113948/http://www.caranddriver.com/news/bmw-760li-auto-shows|url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|title=2002 BMW 316ti - Review and road test|url=http://www.automobilemag.com/news/bmw-316ti-2/|website=www.automobilemag.com|date=July 2001 |access-date=7 August 2017|archive-date=7 August 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170807121045/http://www.automobilemag.com/news/bmw-316ti-2/|url-status=live}}</ref>
== Design == The variable valve timing (VANOS) is a continuously variable design and is present on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The VANOS units were designed as integral components of the chain drive, and the adjustment ranges are 63 degrees for the intake camshaft and 60 degrees for the exhaust camshaft.<ref name="australiancar.reviews">{{cite web|title=BMW N73 engine|url=http://australiancar.reviews/bmw_N73.php|website=www.australiancar.reviews|access-date=7 August 2017|archive-date=7 August 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170807112707/http://australiancar.reviews/bmw_N73.php|url-status=live}}</ref> The redline for the N73 is 6,500 rpm.
The N73 engine also has variable valve lift (valvetronic), which varied intake valve opening lift from {{cvt|0.30|-|9.85|mm|2}}, according to engine speed and load. Each cylinder head has a valvetronic assembly – including a motor, control module and position sensor.<ref name="australiancar.reviews"/>
The N73 was superseded by the BMW N74, a twin-turbocharged V12 engine.
