'''BC Avtodor''' ({{langx|ru|БК «Автодор» Саратов}}), commonly known as simply '''Avtodor''' and internationally as '''Avtodor Saratov''', is a Russian professional basketball club based in Saratov. It plays in the VTB United League, the highest level of Russian basketball. In early 2022, after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Americans D. J. ==History==
===Establishment and growth (1960–1992)=== Founded in 1960 as Spartak Saratov, former player Vladimir Rodionov became its head coach in the 1982. The club was later renamed into Avtodorozhnik (road engineer) - shortened to Avtodor in 1996 - in reference to a late benefactor.<ref>{{cite video |date=18 February 2015 |title=Map of the league - Avtodor Saratov |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=160&v=GbXb-SjFyzI |publisher=VTB United League |access-date=25 August 2015 |time=2:40 |quote=The man who ran the Avtodor company died in the 1990s. ===Scaling the heights (1992–2004)=== Joining the Russian League at its creation in 1992, the club competed with CSKA Moscow (being the first club to defeat them in the league) for national supremacy during the rest of the decade, finishing in second place four times between 1994 and 1999.<ref name=EurocupProfile>{{cite web |url=http://www.eurocupbasketball.com/eurocup/news/i/6amicsl9d4uwskho/club-profile-avtodor-saratov |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150924181821/http://www.eurocupbasketball.com/eurocup/news/i/6amicsl9d4uwskho/club-profile-avtodor-saratov |url-status=dead |archive-date=September 24, 2015 |title=Club profile: Avtodor Saratov |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |date=25 August 2015 |website=EurocupBasketball.com |access-date=25 August 2015}}</ref> It would win the regular season in both 1997 and 1998,<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/avtodor-beats-cska-98-87-grabs-regular-season-title/292440.html |title=Avtodor beats CSKA 98-87, grabs regular-season title |last=Fyodorov |first=Gennady |date=11 April 1998 |website=TheMoscowTimes.com |access-date=25 August 2015}}</ref> but lost both finals series against CSKA 2–3,<ref name=MTProblems>{{cite web |url=http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/russian-league-final-set-despite-arena-problems/291122.html |title=Russian League final set despite arena problems |last=Fyodorov |first=Gennady |date=8 May 1998 |website=TheMoscowTimes.com |access-date=25 August 2015}}</ref> and 1–3 respectively.<ref name=MTcrown>{{cite web |url=http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/cska-takes-crown-with-road-win/290514.html |title=CSKA takes crown with road win |last=Fyodorov |first=Gennady |date=21 May 1998 |website=TheMoscowTimes.com |access-date=25 August 2015}}</ref>
The Russian outfit regularly took part in European competitions during that period, reaching the semifinals of the 1998 second-tier EuroCup and playing in the 1999 top-tier EuroLeague (exiting at the first group stage).<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.fibaeurope.com/eurochallenge/pageID_8T2I,t-vIzEIFjgX-GYfo1.compID_BYg5Rb55Jw-G5I3MZ6JB01.season_2015.roundID_10369.teamID_2235.html |title=Avtodor Saratov - team history |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |website=FIBAEurope.com |access-date=26 August 2015}}</ref> Avtodor defeated CSKA in the 2001–02 playoff quarterfinals,<ref name=VTBfastest>{{cite web |url=http://www.vtb-league.com/en/news/avtodor-is-going-to-be-the-leagues-fastest-team.htm |title=Vladimir Rodionov: Avtodor is going to be the League's fastest team |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |date=19 September 2014 |website=VTB-League.com |access-date=25 August 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150929192723/http://www.vtb-league.com/en/news/avtodor-is-going-to-be-the-leagues-fastest-team.htm |archive-date=29 September 2015 |url-status=dead }}</ref> the only team to have prevented the Army men from reaching the top four in Russian basketball history.<ref name=KhimkiTakes>{{cite web |url=http://www.vtb-league.com/en/news/game-of-the-week-khimki-takes-on-saratov-monia-returns-home.htm |title=Game of the Week. ===Demise and rebuilding (2004–2014)===
After threatening to do so for years because of disputes with the local administration, especially regarding the lack of a convenient arena,<ref name=MTmove>{{cite web |url=http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/russia-starts-cup-drive-with-116-73-stunner/296867.html |title=Russia starts cup drive with 116-73 stunner |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |date=28 November 1997 |website=TheMoscowTimes.com |access-date=25 August 2015}}</ref> Rodionov moved the organisation to Saint Petersburg during the 2004 summer. He would form Dynamo Saint Petersburg, transferring some of Avtodor's best players such as Vladimir Veremeenko,<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.eurocupbasketball.com/eurocup/features/player-spotlight/i/42848/vladimir-veremeenko-unics-kazan |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150924051005/http://www.eurocupbasketball.com/eurocup/features/player-spotlight/i/42848/vladimir-veremeenko-unics-kazan |url-status=dead |archive-date=September 24, 2015 |title=Vladimir Veremeenko, Unics Kazan |last=Kazankov |first=Andrei |date=26 January 2009 |website=EurocupBasketball.com |access-date=25 August 2015}}</ref> and its place in the Super League.<ref name=KMbasket>{{cite web |url=http://www.kommersant.ru/doc/513840 |script-title=ru:Саратов остался без большого баскетбола |last=Snastin |first=Kiril |date=12 October 2004 |website=Kommersant.ru |access-date=25 August 2015 |language=ru |trans-title=Saratov left without elite basketball}}</ref>
Meanwhile, a cash-strapped Avtodor voluntarily relegated itself to the second division for 2004–05, fielding an noncompetitive side made of youngsters,<ref name=KMbasket /> before moving down to the third division in 2005.<ref name=EurocupProfile /> Avtodor would win the second division in 2009 but did not have the financial means to return to the Super League. It did return to the Super League in 2012 but by that time the league had become the domestic second division. Winning that league in 2014, in large part thanks to the play of league MVP Courtney Fortson and promising youngster Artem Klimenko, the club received an invitation to play in the top-tier VTB United League and the European third-tier EuroChallenge for 2014-15.<ref name=VTBfastest />
The club was able to fund its participation thanks to increased support from the local administration, who reduced the funding of the city's ice hockey club Kristall Saratov to compensate.<ref name=SEavtodor>{{cite web |url=http://www.sport-express.ru/basketball/vtb-league/reviews/833923/ |script-title=ru:Автодор уже обещает Бой ЦСКА |last1=Anfinogentov |first1=Andrey |last2=Bezjazychny |first2=Aleksey |last3=Rustamov |first3=Timur |date=7 December 2014 |website=Sport-Express.ru |access-date=25 August 2015 |language=ru |trans-title=Avtodor already takes aim at CSKA}}</ref>
===Back at the top (2014–2019)===
After losing seven of its first nine VTB League games, Avtodor regrouped with the help of November acquisition Kyrylo Fesenko and the play of December league MVP Fortson.<ref name=KhimkiTakes /> Despite three coaching changes, with Vladimir Antsiferov replaced by his assistant Sergey Mokin in late October before Rodionov fired Mokin and took the coaching reins himself on 3 March 2015, the club reached the EuroChallenge quarterfinals where they lost to Trabzonspor.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.fibaeurope.com/eurochallenge/cid_04nV5LW1InMnPsDwhkujE0.teamID_97200.compID_BYg5Rb55Jw-G5I3MZ6JB01.season_2015.roundID_10369.coid_ajWpdYrkJfwgNptiddVsV2.articleMode_on.html |title=Avtodor's bumpy season finds reward |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |date=9 April 2015 |website=FIBAEurope.com |access-date=25 August 2015}}</ref>
In the league, Avtodor beat sides CSKA Moscow, Khimki Moscow Region, Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar and Unics Kazan to reach the playoffs,<ref name=EurocupProfile /> but lost three contested games against Khimki to exit at the quarterfinal stage.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.vtb-league.com/en/news/quarterfinals-recap-2.htm |title=Quarterfinals. ===2020-present=== In early 2022, after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Americans D. J. Funderburk and Grant Jerrett and Canadians Kenny Chery and Philip Scrubb left the team.<ref name="auto"/>
==Arena==
Avtodor formerly played in the Yunost arena, seating only a few hundred and unable to accommodate television broadcasts,<ref name=Yunost>{{cite web |url=http://www.themoscowtimes.com/printhttp://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/avtodor-downs-cska-109-107-for-1-0-lead/308087.html |title=Avtodor downs CSKA 109-107 for 1-0 lead |last=Fyodorov |first=Gennady |date=25 April 1997 |website=TheMoscowTimes.com |access-date=25 August 2015}}</ref> which meant the side had to play its European games in Moscow.<ref name=MTmove /> During the 1997–98 season, the club played its regular-season games in the Yunost arena before moving for its playoffs games to an indoor-football arena whilst a new arena was being refurbished.<ref name=MTProblems />
It moved to the newly reopened 1,500 seat Zvezdny Sports Palace in May of that year,<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/cska-heads-to-saratov-leading-2-1/290754.html |title=CSKA heads to Saratov leading 2-1 |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |date=16 May 1998 |website=TheMoscowTimes.com |access-date=25 August 2015}}</ref> though this arena also proved too small as 2,000 fans packed the venue during a 21 May 1998 game against CSKA (albeit the league title decisive game), with some hanging from the balcony.<ref name=MTcrown />
Calls for the club to move in the larger Kristall Arena (an ice hockey arena built in 1969),<ref name=Yunost /> were finally heeded in 2014. Avtodor remodeled the arena for basketball play, which also raised the capacity from 5,450 to 6,100 seats,<ref name=SEavtodor /> playing their first game there on November 11.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.vtb-league.com/en/news/week-6-recap-3.htm |title=Week 6.
