== Aircraft == [[Avient Aviation]] took delivery of Z-BAV on 20 November 2009, eight days before the crash.<ref>{{Cite web|last=Kaminski-Morrow|first=David|date=2009-11-29|title=US investigators to assist Shanghai MD-11 crash inquiry|url=https://www.flightglobal.com/us-investigators-to-assist-shanghai-md-11-crash-inquiry/90653.article|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=2020-09-20|website=Flight Global}}</ref>
== Incident == As the aircraft rotated for departure, the [[Tailstrike|tail struck the ground]], and the aircraft then overshot the end of the runway, crashed and landed on top of a warehouse near the runway. The plane was written off.<ref name="ASN281109">{{cite web|last=Ranter|first=Harro|date=|title=Accident description|url=http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20091128-0|url-status=live|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20091201010616/http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20091128-0|archivedate=1 December 2009|accessdate=28 November 2009|website=aviation-safety.net|publisher=Aviation Safety Network}}</ref>
Crew members were from the United States (4), Indonesia (1), Belgium (1) and Zimbabwe (1).<ref name="AVH2020"/>
== Investigation == Official investigation reports have been difficult to acquire over the years; on 28 February 2020, an English translation of a "brief abstract" of a Chinese investigation became publicly available. According to this translated abstract, the thrust levers were never advanced to takeoff position, and the autothrust never transitioned to takeoff mode. The crew perceived through physical cues that thrust was abnormally low, but neither identified the problem nor took any corrective action. Simulations seemed to indicate that with timely corrective action, recovery and prevention of the accident was possible. Fatigue was suspected to be a contributing factor for all crew members, many suffering jetlag from lengthy travel and numerous time zone transitions to position themselves for the accident flight.<ref name="AVH2020">{{cite web |title=Crash: Avient Aviation MD11 at Shanghai on Nov 28th 2009, overran runway on takeoff |url=https://avherald.com/h?article=423638d8 |accessdate=2020-02-29 |website=www.avherald.com}}</ref>
