The son of Tobias Teape, he was born at Blackheath in January 1843. He was educated at Eton College,<ref name="BOOK">{{cite book |title=The Eton College Register 1853–1859 |date=1905 |volume=2 |publisher=Spottiswoode & Co, Ltd. |page=63 |url=https://archive.org/details/etonregister02collgoog/page/n85/mode/2up |language=en}}</ref> before going up to Exeter College, Oxford.<ref>{{alox2|title=Teape, Arthur Stanley}}</ref> While studying at Oxford, he played first-class cricket for Oxford University, making his debut against the Marylebone Cricket Club at Oxford in 1863.
