Born at Shenfield, Essex, Hillary studied at the University of Cambridge, while there he played a single first-class cricket match for the university cricket club against Sussex at Fenner's in 1951.<ref>{{cite web |url-access=subscription |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/30/30246/First-Class_Matches.html|title=First-Class Matches played by Anthony Hillary|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=8 November 2013}}</ref> In a match which ended as a draw, Hillary batted once, scoring 49 runs in Cambridge University's first-innings before being dismissed by James Langridge.<ref>{{cite web |url-access=subscription |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/19/19698.html|title=Cambridge University v Sussex, 1951|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=8 November 2013}}</ref> He later played minor counties cricket for Berkshire, debuting in the 1954 Minor Counties Championship against Cornwall.
