It was first described by Edward Meyrick in 1928. It is endemic to the Hawaiian islands of Oahu, Molokai and Hawaii.<ref name=":0">{{Cite journal |last=Zimmerman |first=Elwood C. |date=1958 |title=Insects of Hawaii. The caterpillar is characterised by four pairs of abdominal prolegs.<ref name=":0" />
