==Distribution== This species is endemic to Puerto Rico.<ref name=gobierno /> Its distribution is rather small, being limited to the arid and semi-arid western half of the southern coast of the island.<ref name=warminganoles /> It was identified and catalogued in 1902 by Leonhard Stejneger, a curator with the Division of Reptiles and Batrachians of the United States National Museum.<ref name= "Stejneger1904Aponcensis"/>
==Etymology== Its species name, consisting of "ponce" plus the Latin suffix -nsis, was given in reference to the place of its discovery, the city of Ponce.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://lizardsandfriends.org/?p=660 |url-status=dead |title=Lizards may be smarter than you think |author=Michele Johnson|publisher= Trinity University|year= 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220705225339/http://lizardsandfriends.org/?p=660|archive-date=5 July 2022}}</ref> Its discovery and documentation were originally published in ''Stejneger, 1904: "The herpetology of Porto Rico".''<ref name="Stejneger1904Aponcensis" />
