== Career == Gunter joined the Smithsonian Institution's Freer and Sackler galleries in 1987 as Assistant Curator of Ancient Near Eastern Art, and in 1992 was appointed Associate Curator.<ref name=":0" /> She was also a visiting assistant professor at Emory University and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.<ref name=":0" /> She was Director of the American Research Institute in Turkey at Ankara and an adjunct associate professor in Near Eastern Studies at Johns Hopkins University.<ref name=":0" />

Gunter became Curator of Ancient Near Eastern Art at the Freer and Sackler in 2004 and served until 2008, while also serving as Head of Scholarly Publications and Programs.<ref name=":1" /> In 2008 she joined Northwestern University as Professor of Art History, Classics, and in the Humanities.<ref name=":1" />
