Pollock was born in April 1962 at Liversedge, Yorkshire. He was educated at Shrewsbury School, before going up to Trinity College, Cambridge.<ref>{{cite book |title=The Cambridge University List of Members |date=1991 |publisher=Cambridge University Press |pages=139 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=05AcAQAAMAAJ |language=en}}</ref> While studying at Cambridge, he made his debut in first-class cricket for Cambridge University against Middlesex at Fenner's in 1982.
