Played by Olivia Colman beginning with the season two episode "Forks," Chef Terry is an acclaimed chef whose Chicago restaurant, Ever, was a legendary three-Michelin-starred destination for a dozen years. Over the course of her career, she employed and trained many notable chefs, including Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), Luca (Will Poulter), and Adam Shapiro (Adam Shapiro). Colman was nominated for an Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy Award for her appearances as Chef Terry in season three of the FX Networks dramedy series.
== Development ==
While developing the story for "Forks," ''The Bear'' culinary producer Courtney Storer suggested to series creator Christopher Storer (her brother) that the head chef at the show's version of Ever be a woman, and he agreed. The character of Andrea Terry was inspired by part by the biographies of Alice Waters and Marcella Hazan.<ref>{{Cite magazine |last=Carlin |first=Shannon |title=The Bear Season 2's Best Food Moments |url=https://time.com/6290336/the-bear-season-2-food/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250714003302/https://time.com/6290336/the-bear-season-2-food/ |archive-date=2025-07-14 |access-date=2025-10-05 |magazine=TIME |language=en}}</ref> Nancy Silverton is an other real-world chef who inspired the styling of Chef Terry.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Reporter |first=Fletcher Peters Entertainment |date=2023-07-03 |title=Will Poulter Endured Months of Chef Training for One Episode of 'The Bear' |url=https://www.thedailybeast.com/obsessed/the-bear-season-2-guest-star-will-poulter-on-ramy-youssefs-brilliant-note/ |access-date=2025-10-08 |website=The Daily Beast |language=en}}</ref> == Biography == Chef Terry is depicted as "calm, caring, soft spoken, and focused."<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |last=Bendersky |first=Ari |date=2024-08-08 |title="People don't remember the food." -- The Bear |url=https://aribendersky.substack.com/p/its-the-people |access-date=2025-09-20 |website=Something Glorious with Ari Bendersky}}</ref> Her legendary restaurant, a fictionalized version of Chicago's real-world Ever, is maybe "the best restaurant in the world."<ref name=":0" /> Her father was in the military and she apparently adapted to his desire for order, such that she "runs her kitchen with the silent precision of a fine Swiss watch."<ref name=":1">{{Cite web |last=Smith |first=Colette |date=2024-07-13 |title=Olivia Colman's The Bear Season 3 Return Somehow Makes The Show's Top-Rated Episode Even Better |url=https://screenrant.com/the-bear-season-3-olivia-colman-return-forks-episode-better/ |access-date=2025-09-20 |website=ScreenRant |language=en}}</ref> Terry is depicted as having trained, employed, mentored, collaborated with or befriended many star chefs, including fictional peers Carmy, Luca, and Adam.<ref name=":4" /> She is also responsible for or somehow familiar with the villainous and sociopathic Chef David Fields (Joel McHale), who haunted the fictional New York restaurant Empire and then Carmy's nightmares and panic attacks for years.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Martin |first=Laura |date=2024-07-01 |title='The Bear' Season 3 Ending, Explained (And the Questions That Still Need Answering) |url=https://www.esquire.com/uk/culture/tv/a61470319/the-bear-season-3-ending-explained/ |access-date=2025-09-20 |website=Esquire |language=en-GB}}</ref> Similarly, Terry's current chef de cuisine Adam Shapiro, who eventually seeks to poach chef Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri) from the Bear to be ''his'' chef de cuisine at an unnamed restaurant in the Avondale neighborhood of Chicago, at one point "erupts into a torrent of verbal abuse aimed at Garrett (Andrew Lopez), who must bear the responsibility for one of his staff having smudged food on a plate. == Critical reception == Reaction to the character of Chef Terry has been broadly positive. A BuzzFeed writer commented in 2025, "Does Olivia Colman ever NOT deliver?
