== Early life and education== Ruhwald completed his BFA at the Royal Danish Academy in Bornholm, Denmark in 2000.<ref name="Moran">{{cite web|url=https://moranmorangallery.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/AR-CV_10-21.pdf|title=ANDERS RUHWALD CV|website=Moranmorangallery.com|access-date=21 July 2022}}</ref> While there, he apprenticed for artist Jun Kaneko, whose work had a lasting influence on his practice.<ref name=":2" /> Ruhwald finished his MA at Royal College of Art in London in 2005,<ref name="Moran" /> studying under Martin Smith, Allison Britton and Emmanuel Cooper.
==Career== Central to Ruhwald's work is the idea that "the messy practicality of objects is something to be embraced and not occluded"<ref name=":1">{{Cite book |last=Morrill |first=Rebecca |title=Vitamin C: Clay and Ceramics in Contemporary Art |publisher=Phaidon |year=2017 |isbn=978-0714-8746-09 |location=London |pages=258}}</ref> and his work can be understood as an amalgamation of both art and design without giving regard to the hierarchies normally assigned to these.<ref name=":0">{{Cite book |last=Shales |first=Ezra |title=Anders Ruhwald- You in Between |publisher=Middelsbrough Institute of Modern Art |year=2008 |isbn=978-0860830788 |editor-last=Beighton |editor-first=James |location=United Kingdom |pages=68}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.phaidon.com/agenda/art/articles/2017/october/26/anders-ruhwald-why-i-create/|title=Anders Ruhwald - Why I Create | art | Agenda | Phaidon|website=Phaidon.com|access-date=21 July 2022}}</ref><ref>{{Cite book |last=Greenhalgh |first=Paul |title=Ceramic Art and Civilization |publisher=Bloomsbury Visual Arts |year=2021 |isbn=9781474239707 |location=London and New York |pages=468}}</ref> Instead, Ruhwald's work implies that "subjectivity arises in the perception of differences, one that is both durational and spatially determined".<ref name=":1" /> Ruhwald's work is rooted "the 20th century Scandinavian tradition of the Formgiver in which the artisan compensates for modernity and our enigmatic dissatisfaction with it".<ref name=":0" /> His work is often highly crafted and a large part of his practice is dedicated to material experimentation and surface development,<ref>{{Cite book |last=Ruhwald |first=Anders |title=Ruhwald vs Stålhane |publisher=Rian designmuseum |year=2022 |isbn=9789197112796 |editor-last=Jönsson |editor-first=Love |location=Sweden |pages=17}}</ref> and as a result Glenn Adamson has noted that "for all their compressed particularity, [his] sculptures are also enlivened by inexhaustible nuance.
