The invention of the satyric iambic verse called Scazon is ascribed to him as well as to Hipponax.<ref>Hephaest. p. 30, 11, Gaisf.</ref> Some fragments of Ananius are preserved by Athenaeus,<ref>Athenaeus pp. 78, 282, 370</ref> and all that is known of him was collected by Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker in the 19th century.<ref>Hipponactis et Ananii Iambographorum Fragmenta, p. 109, &c.</ref>
