He was born on 4 November 1916<ref name="DNZB Pyatt">{{DNZB|last=Brown|first=Colin |id=5P42|title=Pyatt, William Allan|access-date=2019-11-27}}</ref> and educated at Christchurch Technical College and the University of Auckland.<ref>Who's Who 2008: London, A & C Black, 2008 {{ISBN|978-0-7136-8555-8}}</ref> He served with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force throughout the Second World War and was ordained in 1946.<ref>Crockford's Clerical Directory1975–76 Lambeth, Church House, 1975 {{ISBN|0-19-200008-X}}</ref> After a curacy at St Luke's Church, Cannock he had incumbencies in Brooklyn, Hāwera then Wellington. From 1962 until his ordination to the episcopate in 1966 he was Dean of ChristChurch Cathedral.
