==Early life== Alexander Cardew was born in Bath, Somerset on 14 March 1861 the eldest son of the Reverend J.W. Cardew.<ref name="obit" /><ref name="oxforddnb">{{Cite ODNB |title=Colonial administrators and post-independence leaders in India (1616–2000) |url=http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/theme/93241}}</ref><ref name="worldstatesmen">{{cite web|title=Provinces of British India|url=http://www.worldstatesmen.org/India_BrProvinces.htm#Madras|publisher=World Statesmen}}</ref> He was educated at the Somersetshire College and The Queen's College, Oxford and entered the Indian Civil Service in 1881.<ref name="obit" />
