The median age was 45.0 years. 21.6% of residents were under the age of 18 and 23.1% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 85.1 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 81.6 males age 18 and over.<ref name="Census2020DP"/>

As of the 2000 U.S. census, there were 7,319 people, 3,197 households, and 1,819 families residing in this city. The population density was {{convert|3,964.9|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 3,460 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1,874.4|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units |units|}}. The racial makeup of this town was 93.80% White, 0.56% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.81% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.55% of the population.
There were 3,197 households, out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.1% were non-families. 38.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 82.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.0 males.
