The village was founded by Baptist<ref name="dorpsplan"/> missionaries next to the Alalapadu Airstrip in order to concentrate the Tiriyó of the area in one central village.{{sfn|Wekker|Molendijk|Vernooij|1992|p=42}}
==History== In 1961 the missionary Claude Leavitt accompanied by a group of Wai-Wai Amerindians convinced the chief of the village Panapipa to settle into a modern village. The entire population moved in to what became known as Alalapadu.{{sfn|Mans|Carlin|2015|p=94}} Up to the 1970s, it was biggest Tiriyó village in Suriname.<ref name="dorpsplan">{{cite web|title=DORPSPLAN ALALAPADU 2011–2014|url=http://www.kennisbanksu.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/DORPSPLAN-Alalapadu-2011.pdf|website=Institute for Graduate Studies and Research via Kennis Bank|access-date=27 May 2020|language=nl}}{{Dead link|date=April 2024 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}</ref> Between 1976 and 1977, Alalapadu was mostly abandoned in favor of the new settlement of Kwamalasamutu, as the soils surrounding the village became depleted.{{sfn|Wekker|Molendijk|Vernooij|1992|p=43}} Alalapadu was never completely abandoned, however, and in 1999, some Tiriyó again permanently settled in the vicinity of the old village.{{sfn|Heemskerk|Delvoye|2007|p=32}} The new village is sometimes known as Alalapadu II.{{sfn|Mans|2012|p=23}} Granman Ashongo had requested its rebuilding.<ref name="dorpsplan"/>
==Overview== There is no electricity. The economy is based small-scale farming. There are no schools, so children have to go to boarding school in Kwamalasamutu. There is a Baptist church in the village. In 2017, a Brazil nut oil production facility opened in Alalapadu.<ref name="Brazil nut SRHerald">{{cite news |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |title=Oplevering Brazil nut olie productiefaciliteit te Alalapadu in Zuid-Suriname |url=https://www.srherald.com/suriname/2017/12/04/oplevering-brazil-nut-olie-productiefaciliteit-te-alalapadu-in-zuid-suriname/ |work=Suriname Herald |date=4 December 2017 |access-date=13 April 2018 }}</ref>
