Born in 1866, he was the great-great grandson of Charles I, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel through his ancestor Christian Theodor von Pincier.<ref>"Who was Who" 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 {{ISBN|978-0-19-954087-7}}</ref> He was educated at Trinity College in Toronto.
