The party was founded by Maulana Badruddin Ajmal on 3 October 2005 and at that time, its name was '''Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF)'''. It was relaunched as a national party under its current name at a press meet in New Delhi on 2 February 2009, again with Badruddin Ajmal as the party's leader. The party is headquartered in Guwahati.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/details.asp?id=jan0509%2Fat05 |title=Third front likely in State for LS polls |access-date=11 February 2022 |archive-date=28 September 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110928145247/http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/details.asp?id=jan0509%2Fat05 |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/politics/minority-party-trying-to-stitch-up-third-front-in-assam_100109242.html |title=Minority party trying to stitch up third front in Assam |access-date=25 May 2009 |archive-date=23 June 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160623005540/http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/politics/minority-party-trying-to-stitch-up-third-front-in-assam_100109242.html |url-status=dead }}</ref>

The AIUDF is a key opposition party in Assam, which has the support of millions of Miya Bengali Muslims from Lower Assam and Barak Valley. It won 18 of 126 seats in the 2011 Legislative Assembly election;<ref>{{cite web|url=http://eciresults.ap.nic.in/PartyWiseResult.htm |title=Partywise Trends & Result |access-date=2014-05-19 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140519040751/http://www.eciresults.ap.nic.in/PartyWiseResult.htm |archive-date=2014-05-19 }}</ref> in 2016, it won 13 of the 126 seats. In the 2021 Assam Assembly Election, Congress and AIUDF formed a grand alliance along with BPF and communist parties. The alliance fought against the BJP-led NDA. AIUDF increased its tally and won 16 of 126 seats in the 2021 Legislative assembly election of Assam.<ref>{{Cite news|title=Assam elections: At 80%, AIUDF had the best strike rate- The New Indian Express|url=https://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2021/may/05/assam-elections-at-80-aiudf-had-the-best-strike-rate-2298817.html}}</ref> However, its alliance could not win enough seats to form a government.
