The '''Eastbourne Open''' (also known as Eastbourne International, formerly Rothesay) is a tennis tournament on the WTA Tour and the ATP Tour held at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club, Eastbourne, United Kingdom. Held since 1974, it is classified as an ATP Tour 250 series on the ATP Tour and a WTA 250 series on the WTA Tour (downgraded from WTA 500 in 2025).<ref> {{cite web|url=https://www.keithprowse.co.uk/devonshire-park/eastbourne-international/?facilityName=Love+Fifteen| title= Lexus Eastbourne Open |accessdate=17 February 2025}}</ref><ref> {{cite web|url=https://www.lta.org.uk/news/lta-and-lexus-extend-their-partnership-to-cover-tournaments-at-nottingham-and-eastbourne/|title= LTA and Lexus extend their partnership to cover tournaments at Nottingham and Eastbourne |date=17 February 2025}} </ref> The tournament is played on outdoor grass courts, and is generally considered a "warm-up" for the Wimbledon Championships, a major tournament, which begins the following week. It was originally just part of the WTA Tour, but from 2009 it was combined as an ATP Tour event. It replaced the Nottingham Open grass court tournament from 2009–2014. Nottingham returned for 2015–2016 with no men's event in Eastbourne, however Eastbourne replaced the Nottingham event again from 2017 onwards. From 2022 until 2024, it was sponsored by Rothesay,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.lta.org.uk/news/rothesay-named-title-sponsor-of-summer-events-in-nottingham-birmingham-and-eastbourne/|title=LTA unveils new partnership with Rothesay as title sponsor of summer events in Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne|publisher=Lawn Tennis Association|date=18 Feb 2022|access-date=26 June 2023}}</ref> with past sponsors including Viking Cruises,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.lta.org.uk/about-us/tennis-news/news-and-opinion/general-news/2021/may/lta-viking-title-sponsorship/|title=Viking confirmed as title sponsor of LTA summer grass court events in Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne|publisher=Lawn Tennis Association|date=21 May 2021|access-date=22 June 2021|archive-date=9 June 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210609091559/https://www.lta.org.uk/about-us/tennis-news/news-and-opinion/general-news/2021/may/lta-viking-title-sponsorship/|url-status=dead}}</ref> Nature Valley and AEGON.<ref>{{cite news| url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/2969485/Andy-Murray-key-to-LTAs-five-year-25m-sponsorship-deal-with-Aegon-Tennis.html | location=London | work=The Daily Telegraph | first=Mark | last=Hodgkinson | title=Andy Murray key to LTA's five-year, £25m sponsorship deal with Aegon | date=2008-09-16}}</ref>
==Combination== During 2007, lack of sponsorship for the Eastbourne tournament led the Lawn Tennis Association to consider moving the tournament to London.<ref>{{Citation|last=Whelan|first=Andy|title=Tennis bosses serve blow to Eastbourne|work=The Argus|date=25 June 2007|url=http://www.theargus.co.uk/mostpopular.var.1494438.mostviewed.tennis_bosses_serve_blow_to_eastbourne.php |access-date=2008-05-15}}</ref> However, as part of a general reorganisation of United Kingdom professional tennis tournaments, it was instead decided to merge the event with the Nottingham Open, traditionally held during the same week. From 2009, therefore, the Eastbourne courts have hosted a combined women's and men's event until 2014. In 2015 and 2016 it was an only a Ladies event (with the men's competition returning to Nottingham).<ref>{{cite news|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/7337663.stm |title=Wimbledon warm-up event scrapped |publisher=BBC |date=2008-04-08 |access-date=2008-04-08 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080412013039/http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/7337663.stm |archive-date=April 12, 2008 }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.eastbourne.gov.uk/eastbourne/tourism/tennis/merged-tennis-events |title=Men and Women's Tennis Merged Events |publisher=Eastbourne Borough Council |access-date=2008-05-18 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080612172506/http://www.eastbourne.gov.uk/eastbourne/tourism/tennis/merged-tennis-events |archive-date=2008-06-12 |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url = http://www.eastbourneherald.co.uk/news/local/breaking-news-eastbourne-to-lose-men-s-tennis-tournament-1-5867753|title = BREAKING NEWS: Eastbourne to lose men's tennis tournament|date = 10 February 2014|access-date = 13 June 2015|website = Eastbourne Herald}}</ref> In 2017, the Eastbourne tournament returned to being a combined event.<ref name="Bigger and better British grass court season announced for 2017">{{cite news |title="Bigger and better" British grass court season announced for 2017 |url=https://www.lta.org.uk/news/general-news/2016/april/bigger-and-better-british-grass-court-season-announced-for-2017/ |publisher=Lawn Tennis Association |date=2016-04-07 |access-date=2016-04-12}}</ref><ref name="Breaking: Men's tennis to return to Eastbourne">{{cite news |title=Breaking: Men's tennis to return to Eastbourne |url=http://www.eastbourneherald.co.uk/news/breaking-men-s-tennis-to-return-to-eastbourne-1-7316186 |publisher=Eastbourne Herald |date=2016-04-07 |access-date=2016-04-12}}</ref>
