The '''2026 Indian Premier League''', also known as '''IPL 19''' and branded as '''TATA IPL 2026''', was the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League, a professional Twenty20 cricket league. The tournament featured 10 teams competing in 74 matches which continued from 28 March to 31 May across 13 venues.
Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Gujarat Titans by 5 wickets in the final to secure their second consecutive IPL title.<ref>{{cite web |access-date=31 May 2026 |title=Kohli, bowlers lead RCB to second straight IPL title |url=https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/ipl-2026-1510719/royal-challengers-bengaluru-vs-gujarat-titans-final-1535465/match-report |website=ESPNCricinfo}}</ref>
== Background == The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 (T20) cricket league, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has held annually since the first edition in 2008.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Indian Premier League |url=https://www.britannica.com/topic/Indian-Premier-League |access-date=16 December 2025 |website=Britannica.com |language=en-uk|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250317155833/https://www.britannica.com/topic/Indian-Premier-League|archive-date=17 March 2025|url-status=live}}</ref> Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the defending champions, having won their maiden title in the previous season after defeating Punjab Kings in the final.<ref>{{Cite news |date=2025-06-03 |title=RCB and Virat Kohli end 18-year wait for IPL glory with six-run defeat of Punjab Kings |url=https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/jun/03/rcb-and-virat-kohli-end-18-year-wait-for-ipl-glory-with-six-run-defeat-of-punjab-kings |access-date=2025-12-23 |work=The Guardian |language=en-GB |issn=0261-3077}}</ref>
=== Format === The group format has been reversed to be similar to that of 2023 IPL. Each team will play once against the teams in their group and twice against the teams in the other group. After the group stage, the top four teams, based on aggregate points, would advance to the playoffs. In this stage, the top two teams compete with each other (in a match titled "qualifier 1"), as do the remaining two teams (in a match titled "eliminator"). While the winner of Qualifier 1 would directly qualify for the final match, the losing team had another chance to qualify for the final match by competing against the winning team of the Eliminator (in a match titled "qualifier 2"). The winner of this subsequent Qualifier 2 match advanced to the final match. Teams were seeded into groups based on the number of titles they have won.<ref name="sch2">{{Cite web |first=Nagraj |last=Gollapudi |title=Mumbai to face CSK and RCB twice as IPL releases full league stage schedule |url=https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/ipl-announces-full-league-stage-schedule-1529214 |access-date=27 March 2026 |date=26 March 2026 |publisher=ESPNcricinfo |language=en |archive-date=27 March 2026 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20260327093618/https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/ipl-announces-full-league-stage-schedule-1529214 |url-status=live }}</ref><ref name="faq">{{Cite web |first=Hemant |last=Brar |title=IPL 2026 FAQs: New venue, big trades, and the million dollar Thala question |url=https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/ipl-2026-faqs-new-venues-big-trades-and-the-age-old-dhoni-question-1529084 |access-date=27 March 2026 |date=25 March 2026 |publisher=ESPNcricinfo |language=en}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=IPL 2023 to be played from March 31 to May 28 |url=https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/ipl-2023-to-begin-on-march-31-1359430 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250805213000/https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/ipl-2023-to-begin-on-march-31-1359430 |archive-date=5 August 2025 |access-date=2026-03-27 |publisher=ESPNcricinfo |language=en |url-status=live }}</ref>
