On June 6, the Red Sox got a measure of retribution for Bucky Dent's home run in the 1978 American League East tie-breaker game. While in Boston for a four-game series, the New York Yankees fired Dent as their manager. The Red Sox had just defeated the Yankees in the first two games of the series,<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1990/VBOS01990.htm |title=The 1990 Boston Red Sox Regular Season Game Log |website=Retrosheet |access-date=October 12, 2020}}</ref> giving the Yankees an 18–31 record, {{frac|8|1|2}} games behind the first-place Red Sox.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1990/06051990.htm |title=Standings At Close of Play of June 5, 1990 |website=Retrosheet |access-date=October 12, 2020}}</ref> The firing made Fenway Park arguably the scene of Dent's best moment as a player and worst moment as manager.<ref>{{cite news |url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/61005969/dent-dumped-by-yankees/ |title=Dent dumped by Yankees |date=June 7, 1990 |author-link=Nick Cafardo |first=Nick |last=Cafardo |newspaper=The Boston Globe |page=37 |via=newspapers.com}}</ref> Although the Red Sox got retribution for Dent's home run, they, along with the Yankees, were shaken to the core by the firing and called it an outrage and blasted Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for firing Dent—his 18th managerial change in as many years—in Boston.<ref name="Dent-Shaughnessy"/><ref name="DentFired-Kubek"/> Dan Shaughnessy of ''The Boston Globe'' criticized Steinbrenner and rhetorically asked if he couldn't have waited to fire Dent elsewhere.<ref name="Dent-Shaughnessy">{{cite news |url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/61005894/his-back-was-against-the-wall/ |title=His back was against the wall |date=June 7, 1990 |first=Dan |last=Shaughnessy |author-link=Dan Shaughnessy |newspaper=The Boston Globe |page=37 |via=newspapers.com}}</ref> Shaughnessy noted, "if Dent had been fired in Seattle or Milwaukee, this would have been just another event in an endless line of George's jettisons.
