**Cary Lewis Long** is an American sculptor, conceptual artist, and former businessman.

## Early life and education

Long was born in 1961 in [Bakersfield, California](/mw/index.php?title=Bakersfield,_California&action=edit&redlink=1).[Template:Citation needed](/mw/index.php?title=Template:Citation_needed&action=edit&redlink=1) He studied art and philosophy at the [University of California, Berkeley](/mw/index.php?title=University_of_California,_Berkeley&action=edit&redlink=1).[Template:Citation needed](/mw/index.php?title=Template:Citation_needed&action=edit&redlink=1)

## Career

Between 1993 and 2008, Long created and operated [Nova Express Café](/mw/index.php?title=Nova_Express_Caf%C3%A9&action=edit&redlink=1), an outer-space and fantasy-themed café and art space in [Los Angeles](/mw/index.php?title=Los_Angeles&action=edit&redlink=1).[1] Much of the decor was fabricated from found objects and second-hand materials.[2] Long described his approach as integrating the direct experience of art with everyday life in order to make art more accessible.[Template:Citation needed](/mw/index.php?title=Template:Citation_needed&action=edit&redlink=1) Each seating area was designed as a themed fantasy zone defined by sculptural art.[3] Many performances by poets, musicians and artists were free to the public.[4] The café, described as a "walk in sculpture that sells pizza",[5] attracted a following during its existence.[6]

After the closure of Nova Express Café, he began work at his [Robot Iguana Studio](/mw/index.php?title=Robot_Iguana_Studio&action=edit&redlink=1) to produce new works and sculptures.
