== Overview ==
Constructed in the mid-19th century, Zinder Mosque was an iconic structure for the local community. It was built using [banco](/source/Banco_(building_material)), a traditional mixture of [mud](/source/mud) and [straw](/source/straw). For centuries, worshippers from various regions journeyed to the mosque for [Friday prayers](/source/Friday_prayer) and during [Islamic holidays](/source/Islamic_holidays). According to Niger's Ministry of Tourism, the mosque was the second-most visited in Niger, following the [UNESCO](/source/UNESCO)-listed [Agadez Mosque](/source/Agadez_Mosque).<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=Au Niger, des pluies diluviennes provoquent l’effondrement de la mosquée de Zinder |url=https://www.jeuneafrique.com/1605190/societe/au-niger-des-pluies-diluviennes-provoquent-leffondrement-de-la-mosquee-de-zinder/ |access-date=2024-09-16 |website=[Jeune Afrique](/source/Jeune_Afrique) |language=fr-FR}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |date=September 4, 2024 |title=Niger Ups Flood Toll To 273 As Historic Mosque Destroyed |url=https://www.barrons.com/news/historic-niger-mosque-destroyed-by-downpour-c8569f12 |access-date=2024-09-16 |website=[Barrons](/source/Barrons) |language=en-US}}</ref>

Cracks were reported in some areas, but we could not intervene due to the rains," a local ministry official explained following the mosque's collapse.<ref>{{Cite web |date=September 4, 2024 |title=Historic mosque in Niger destroyed by torrential rains |url=https://www.trtworld.com/africa/historic-mosque-in-niger-destroyed-by-torrential-rains-18203867 |access-date=2024-09-16 |website=[TRT World](/source/TRT_World) |language=en}}</ref> On 3 September 2024, intense rainfall caused the mosque to collapse.
