"**Zinda Banda**" is an Indian [Hindi](/source/Hindi)-language song composed and recorded by [Anirudh Ravichander](/source/Anirudh_Ravichander), with lyrics by [Irshad Kamil](/source/Irshad_Kamil) for the [soundtrack album](/source/Jawan_(soundtrack)) of the 2023 Indian film *[Jawan](/source/Jawan_(film))*. It was released on 31 July 2023 as the first single from the album, through [T-Series](/source/T-Series_(company)).

The song was also released in [Tamil](/source/Tamil_language) as "Vandha Edam" and in [Telugu](/source/Telugu_language) as "Dhumme Dhulipelaa". Upon release, the song received positive reviews from critics and audiences with the hook step performed by [Shah Rukh Khan](/source/Shah_Rukh_Khan) under the choreography of [Shobi Paulraj](/source/Shobi_(choreographer)) becoming popular.

## Composition and lyrics

"Zinda Banda" was the first song composed for the film which was first recorded in its Tamil version, "Vandha Edam" and later in the original Hindi version.[1] On composing the track, Anirudh recalled that Khan was synonymous for his iconic songs that transcends generations and had to do justice to his stardom.[1]

The song features lyrics written by [Irshad Kamil](/source/Irshad_Kamil), who was the guest lyricist for the film. It opens with a [couplet](/source/Couplet) from a poem written by [Wasim Barelvi](/source/Wasim_Barelvi) and said by Khan (only in the original version), while the female vocals were performed by [Mangli](/source/Mangli) under the supervision of [Sri Krishna](/source/Sri_Krishna_(singer)).[2]

## Music video

The song was shot in August 2022 for five days at a schedule in [Chennai](/source/Chennai) with the choreography of [Shobi Paulraj](/source/Shobi_(choreographer)). Featuring Khan, along with [Priyamani](/source/Priyamani), [Sanya Malhotra](/source/Sanya_Malhotra), [Sanjeeta Bhattacharya](/source/Sanjeeta_Bhattacharya), [Lehar Khan](/source/Lehar_Khan) and [Girija Oak](/source/Girija_Oak),[3][4] the song featured around 1000 dancers from Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bangalore.[5][6] The reported production cost for picturization of the song was ₹15 crore (US$1.6 million) becoming the most expensive Indian film song ever shot.[7] It was also reshot for the Tamil version.[8] Director [Atlee](/source/Atlee_(director)) made a [cameo appearance](/source/Cameo_appearance) in the song.[9][10]

## Release and reception

The song was released as the [lead single](/source/Lead_single) from the album on 31 July 2023, with an accompanying music video.[11]

Reviewing the song "Zinda Banda", Prachi Arya of *[India Today](/source/India_Today)* wrote "The song encapsulates the spirit of the film, exuding grandness, vibrancy and celebration",[12] while *[Hindustan Times](/source/Hindustan_Times)*-based critic commented that "The song is a fun and groovy one as it makes you want to dance to its beats."[13] Renuka Vyahare of *[The Times of India](/source/The_Times_of_India)* cited "Zinda Banda" as the pick from the album.[14] In contrast, Raghav Bikhchandani of *[ThePrint](/source/ThePrint)* compared it inferior to [Vishal–Shekhar](/source/Vishal%E2%80%93Shekhar)'s composition "[Jhoome Jo Pathaan](/source/Jhoome_Jo_Pathaan)" from *[Pathaan](/source/Pathaan_(film))* (2023).[15] He compared the melodies and sounding of the track, which was too similar to "[I'm Shipping Up to Boston](/source/I'm_Shipping_Up_to_Boston)" (2005) by the [Dropkick Murphys](/source/Dropkick_Murphys) and the vocal delivery to that of [Vishal Dadlani](/source/Vishal_Dadlani)'s "Malhari" from *[Bajirao Mastani](/source/Bajirao_Mastani)* (2015).[15]

## Impact

Within 24 hours of its release, the video song garnered 46 million views becoming the most-viewed Indian film song of 2023 in a span of 24 hours surpassing "Jai Shri Ram" from *[Adipurush](/source/Adipurush)*.[16][17] This record was however surpassed by another song from the same film, "[Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya](/source/Not_Ramaiya_Vastavaiya)" that garnered 53 million views.[18] The hook step from the song choreographed by Shobi went viral, leading to numerous recreations across social media.[19][20] [Mohanlal](/source/Mohanlal) recreated the hook step at an award show in [Kochi](/source/Kochi).[21][22]

## Other versions

The song was released in Tamil as "Vandha Edam" with lyrics written by [Vivek](/source/Vivek_(lyricist)) and in Telugu as "Dhumme Dhulipelaa" with lyrics written by [Chandrabose](/source/Chandrabose_(lyricist)); both the versions of the song were sung by Anirudh.[23][24]
