Mapped by [United States Geological Survey](/source/United_States_Geological_Survey) (USGS) from surveys and [U.S. Navy](/source/U.S._Navy) air photos, 1961–66. Named by [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names) (US-ACAN) for equipment operator [Ernest L. Ziegler](/source/Ernest_L._Ziegler), U.S. Navy, a participant in [Operation Deep Freeze](/source/Operation_Deep_Freeze) 1966 at [McMurdo Station](/source/McMurdo_Station).
