# Zea Harbour Project

**Zea Harbour Project** is a Danish-Greek archaeological project in [Piraeus](/source/Piraeus), [Greece](/source/Greece). The project began in 2002 under the auspices of the [Danish Institute at Athens](/source/Danish_Institute_at_Athens) and is directed by [Bjørn Lovén](/source/Bj%C3%B8rn_Lov%C3%A9n), Associate Fellow in [Maritime Archaeology](/source/Maritime_archaeology) at the University of Southern Denmark. The Zea Harbour Project's goal is to excavate and investigate ancient [Athenian naval bases](/source/Athenian_navy) and their fortifications.[1] The Zea Harbour Project aims to recover the Athenian fleet of [triremes](/source/Triremes) believed to be located in the ancient harbors of [Zea](/source/Bay_of_Zea) and [Munichia](/source/Munichia),[2] in [Piraeus](/source/Piraeus), [Athens](/source/Athens), [Greece](/source/Greece).

The last excavation[needs update] conducted by the Zea Harbour Project began on December 9, 2012[3]
