The hamlet was probably founded in the first half of the twelfth century when some local farmers went to live on a dike made of sand, for which the hamlet was named.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|url=http://www.stichtingveere.nl/Themapagina7.shtml|title=Thema: Het oude Zanddijk|website=www.stichtingveere.nl|access-date=2020-04-13|archive-date=2021-03-25|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210325192956/https://www.stichtingveere.nl/Themapagina7.shtml|url-status=dead}}</ref> (Zanddijk literally means "sand dike".)
