# Zaans

**Zaans** is a dialect of [Dutch](/source/Dutch_language) spoken in the [Zaan](/source/Zaan) district, which lies north of [Amsterdam](/source/Amsterdam), in the Dutch province of [North Holland](/source/North_Holland). Zaans is one of the oldest dialects in the country. The dialect has similarities to the [West Frisian](/source/West_Frisian_Dutch) dialect which is spoken in an area further north of the Zaan district.

Zaans is spoken in the city of [Zaandam](/source/Zaandam) and in the towns of [Oostzaan](/source/Oostzaan), [Westzaan](/source/Westzaan), [Krommenie](/source/Krommenie), [Assendelft](/source/Assendelft), [Zaandijk](/source/Zaandijk), [Koog aan de Zaan](/source/Koog_aan_de_Zaan), [Jisp](/source/Jisp), [Wormerveer](/source/Wormerveer), [Wormer](/source/Wormer), and [Oost-](/source/Oostknollendam) and [West-Knollendam](/source/West-Knollendam).

In the late 19th century, [Gerrit Jacob Boekenoogen](/source/Gerrit_Jacob_Boekenoogen) published a 1368-page dictionary of Zaans, *De Zaansche volkstaal. Bijdrage tot de kennis van den woordenschat in Noord-Holland* ([Leiden](/source/Leiden), 1897).

A Zaans phrase now used throughout the Netherlands is *doeg* or *doei*, a colloquial term for "goodbye".[citation needed]
