'''Yunioshi''' are an [electronic rock](/source/electronic_rock) band from [Nottingham](/source/Nottingham), [England](/source/England), formed in October 2006. They describe their sound as "robot funk". The name Yunioshi came from [I.Y. Yunioshi](/source/I.Y._Yunioshi), a character in [Truman Capote](/source/Truman_Capote)'s [novella](/source/novella), [''Breakfast at Tiffany's''](/source/Breakfast_at_Tiffany's_(novella)).<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/nottingham/content/articles/2007/01/22/yunioshi_interview_feature.shtml|title=Introducing... Yunioshi|date=22 January 2007|work=BBC Nottingham|access-date=19 July 2009}}</ref>

Their sound was described by [TuneTribe](/source/TuneTribe) as 'the exact place where found sounds and [breakbeats](/source/breakbeats) merge with left of centre [indie pop](/source/indie_pop); all lilting [Beck](/source/Beck)-style rhythms and hummable hooks'{{Citation needed|date=January 2019}} and by [LeftLion](/source/LeftLion) as "[Beck](/source/Beck) dry humping the [Flaming Lips](/source/Flaming_Lips) with the robot from [Lost In Space](/source/Lost_In_Space) looking on and filming all the action for his own personal collection. The perfect pop band. They're as catchy as hell."{{Citation needed|date=January 2019}}

==History==
Their single, "Mymo", was used by [Kia](/source/Kia_Motors) for the soundtrack to their UK television advertising campaign ''Cube'' for the Kia Carens model between December 2006 and February 2007.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.leapmusic.com/our-work-detail.asp?ID=120 |title=Kia Carens :: Cube |work=Leap Music |access-date=2009-07-19 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090624212155/http://www.leapmusic.com/our-work-detail.asp?ID=120 |archive-date=24 June 2009 }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.mad.co.uk/Main/Home/Articlex/8a80bd3a4ae04b85a42231966c427076/Kia-to-run-new-ad-campaign.html|title=Kia to run new ad campaign|last=Durrani|first=Arif|date=20 December 2006|work=mad.co.uk|access-date=2009-07-19}}</ref>

Other tracks that have been used in advertising include "Thunderbird", which was used to advertise [South Park](/source/South_Park) on [Comedy Central](/source/Comedy_Central) as well as being used numerous times by [Sky Sports](/source/Sky_Sports) and [Setanta Sports](/source/Setanta_Sports). "Leisure Rules" was also used as part of [Vauxhall](/source/Vauxhall_Motors) Astra campaign.

Yunioshi were selected by [BBC Introducing](/source/BBC_Introducing) as a band to look out for. They have recorded sessions at BBC [Maida Vale Studios](/source/Maida_Vale_Studios) and performed on various BBC Introducing festival stages in the UK. They have appeared live on [Tom Robinson](/source/Tom_Robinson)'s [BBC Radio 6 Music](/source/BBC_Radio_6_Music) show as well as further airplay on [Steve Lamacq](/source/Steve_Lamacq), [Huw Stephens](/source/Huw_Stephens) and [BBC Local Radio](/source/BBC_Local_Radio) stations. There was a quiz about the band on [Stephen Merchant](/source/Stephen_Merchant)'s BBC Radio 6 Music show.

They played the [Bloom](/source/Bloom_Festival), [Summer Sundae](/source/Summer_Sundae) and [Splendour in Nottingham](/source/Splendour_in_Nottingham) festivals,<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/entertainmentnews/Undefined-Headline/article-1177676-detail/article.html|title=Splendour: Local bands take to stage as festival kicks off Sunday|date=19 July 2009|work=Nottingham Evening Post|access-date=19 July 2009}}</ref> in July and August 2009.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/bands.php?BandID=24271|title=Yunioshi|work=eFestivals|access-date=19 July 2009}}</ref> In 2010 the band played numerous live events in the UK to a growing fan base. Later in the year they went to [Reykjavík](/source/Reykjav%C3%ADk) to play the [Iceland Airwaves](/source/Iceland_Airwaves) festival. Upon their return from [Iceland](/source/Iceland) they headlined the Hockley Hustle festival at [Nottingham Contemporary](/source/Nottingham_Contemporary).{{Citation needed|date=January 2019}}

They provide cake for their audiences at live shows. They refer to the Yunioshi Catering Corporation as the provider of the cake. There is normally a link to the event or venue in some tenuous way.{{Citation needed|date=January 2019}}{{Importance inline|date=January 2019}}
