==History==
The territory of present-day Yuanping was held by [Zhao](/source/state_of_Zhao) during the [Warring States Period](/source/Warring_States_Period) of [Chinese history](/source/Chinese_history). Under the [Qin dynasty](/source/Qin_dynasty), it was part of Taiyuan Commandary. It became {{nowrap|'''Yuanping County'''}} in 114{{nbsp}}BC under [Emperor Wu](/source/Emperor_Wu_of_Han) of the [Han](/source/Han_dynasty). It became {{nowrap|'''Xinxing County'''}} in [Jian'an](/source/Jian'an_Era) 15 during the [Eastern Han](/source/Eastern_Han_dynasty). Three years later, its name was restored as Yuanping County, but it was moved to [Yanmen Commandery](/source/Yanmen_Commandery).

==Geography==
Yuanping is located nearly due north of [Taiyuan](/source/Taiyuan), the provincial capital.

===Climate===
Yuanping has a [monsoon](/source/monsoon)-influenced, [continental](/source/continentality) [semi-arid climate](/source/semi-arid_climate) ([Köppen](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification) ''BSk''), with cold and very dry winters, and hot, humid summers. The monthly 24-hour average temperature ranges from {{convert|−7.0|°C|1}} in January to {{convert|23.7|°C|1}} in July, and the annual mean is {{convert|9.55|°C|1}}. Nearly half of the {{convert|412|mm}} of precipitation occurs in July and August alone. Due to the high elevation and dry climate, the [diurnal temperature variation](/source/diurnal_temperature_variation) easily exceeds {{convert|15|C-change}} in winter and spring, with monthly percent possible sunshine ranging from 50% in July to 62% in four months, and the average annual total is 2,585 hours.

The city lies on the [G55 Erenhot–Guangzhou Expressway](/source/G55_Erenhot%E2%80%93Guangzhou_Expressway). [Yuanping West railway station](/source/Yuanping_West_railway_station) lies on the [Datong–Xi'an high-speed railway](/source/Datong%E2%80%93Xi'an_high-speed_railway) and the [Jining–Datong–Yuanping high-speed railway](/source/Jining%E2%80%93Datong%E2%80%93Yuanping_high-speed_railway).
