# Young Adam

***Young Adam*** is a [1954](/source/1954_in_literature) novel by [Alexander Trocchi](/source/Alexander_Trocchi) which tells the story of Joe, a young man who labours on the [river barges](/source/Barge) of [Glasgow](/source/Glasgow), and who discovers the body of a young woman floating in the canal. The novel focuses on the relationship between Joe and his companions on the barge – a husband, Les and his younger wife, Ella – and it becomes clearer as the novel progresses that Joe is connected to the dead woman he found.[1]

This story was adapted into film as *[Young Adam](/source/Young_Adam_(film))* in [2003](/source/2003_in_film) starring [Ewan McGregor](/source/Ewan_McGregor), [Tilda Swinton](/source/Tilda_Swinton) and [Peter Mullan](/source/Peter_Mullan).[2]
