"**You Know My Steez**" is a song by American hip hop duo [Gang Starr](/source/Gang_Starr), released on November 18, 1997 as the lead single from their fifth studio album *[Moment of Truth](/source/Moment_of_Truth_(Gang_Starr_album))* (1998). It samples "[Drowning in the Sea of Love](/source/Drowning_in_the_Sea_of_Love)" by [Joe Simon](/source/Joe_Simon_(musician)), "Flash It to the Beat" by [Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five](/source/Grandmaster_Flash_and_the_Furious_Five), "B Side Wins Again" by [Public Enemy](/source/Public_Enemy), "[Real Hip-Hop](/source/Real_Hip-Hop)" by [Das EFX](/source/Das_EFX), "[Shadowboxin'](/source/Shadowboxin')" by [GZA](/source/GZA) featuring [Method Man](/source/Method_Man) and "Usual Suspect" by [Big Noyd](/source/Big_Noyd) featuring [Prodigy](/source/Prodigy_(rapper)).

## Background

In an interview with *[Wax Poetics](/source/Wax_Poetics)* in 2018, [DJ Premier](/source/DJ_Premier) revealed his inspiration behind producing the beat for the song:

I already had the idea of what I wanted to do with the [Grandmaster Flash](/source/Grandmaster_Flash) "Flash It to the Beat" sample. [Showbiz](/source/Showbiz_and_A.G.) used it on a skit for *[Runaway Slave](/source/Runaway_Slave)*. We used to all hang out—me Showbiz, [Large Pro](/source/Large_Professor), [Pete Rock](/source/Pete_Rock), [Diamond D](/source/Diamond_D); we saw each other all the time. We were cool and shared what records we used. So I wanted to do my own interpretation of it after hearing how Showbiz used it.[1]

The hook of the song borrows lyrics from Method Man's verse on "Shadowboxin'".[1][2]

## Critical reception

Brett Johnson of *[Los Angeles Times](/source/Los_Angeles_Times)* described the song as having "barrel-chested bragging", which he regarded as a good part of *Moment of Truth*.[3] Tom Doggett of *RapReviews* wrote "Primo's initially awkward beat for 'You Know My Steez' thumps with a crooked combination of bass and treble, but [Guru](/source/Guru_(rapper)) actually snatches the shine from his counterpart".[4]

## Music video

The music video was directed by Terry Heller, the nephew of music manager [Jerry Heller](/source/Jerry_Heller). It was based on the 1971 film *[THX 1138](/source/THX_1138)* and is set in an underground city where people are medically controlled. Guru and DJ Premier shaved their heads bald for the video.[2]

## Charts
