The **York rating**[1] was a valuation of the [Spanish dollar](/source/Spanish_dollar) in the [£sd](/source/%C2%A3sd) accounting system. It set the dollar equal to 8 [shillings](/source/Shilling) (1 [real](/source/Spanish_real) = 1 shilling). The rating was named after the [colony of New York](/source/Colony_of_New_York) where it was adopted (see [New York pound](/source/New_York_pound)). It was also used in [Upper Canada](/source/Upper_Canada) by [United Empire Loyalists](/source/United_Empire_Loyalists) following the [American War of Independence](/source/American_War_of_Independence) (see [Canadian dollar](/source/Canadian_dollar)).
