# Yong Tan

**Yong Tan** is the Neal and Jan Dempsey Professor of Information Systems at the [University of Washington](/source/University_of_Washington) [Foster School of Business](/source/Foster_School_of_Business).[1] He is the director of Center for Data Analytics at USTC-UW Institute for Global Business and Finance Innovation[2] and proved instrumental in establishing the Institute with the [University of Science and Technology of China](/source/University_of_Science_and_Technology_of_China) (USTC), Tan’s alma mater.[3] He was named a [Chang Jiang Scholar](/source/Changjiang_Scholars_Program) by the [Chinese Ministry of Education](/source/Chinese_Ministry_of_Education) and Hong Kong [Li Ka Shing Foundation](/source/Li_Ka_Shing_Foundation), serving as a chair [visiting professor](/source/Visiting_professor) at the School of Economics and Management at [Tsinghua University](/source/Tsinghua_University).[4] In 2016, he won the INFORMS ISS Distinguished Fellow Award.[5] He received the 2017 Best Paper Award in [Information Systems](/source/Information_Systems) from [*Management Science*](/source/Management_Science_(journal)).[3] Tan received the Best Publication Award from the [Association of Information Systems](/source/Association_of_Information_Systems).[3]

Yong Tan received [Bachelor of Science](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) in Physics from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1987, and was selected as one of the 915 students in the [CUSPEA](/source/CUSPEA) program created by Nobel laureate [Tsung-Dao Lee](/source/Tsung-Dao_Lee).[6] Yong Tan received his [Ph.D.](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) in Physics from the University of Washington in 1993, advised by Nobel laureate [David J. Thouless](/source/David_J._Thouless). He joined the Foster School faculty full-time after earning his Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Washington in 2000, where Vijay Mookerjee was his doctoral advisor.[7]
