==Biography==
Born in [Berdychiv](/source/Berdychiv) in the [Kiev Governorate](/source/Kiev_Governorate) of the [Russian Empire](/source/Russian_Empire) (present-day [Ukraine](/source/Ukraine)), Berman [emigrated](/source/aliyah) to [Mandate Palestine](/source/Mandatory_Palestine) in 1920.<ref name=P>[https://www.knesset.gov.il/mk/eng/mk_eng.asp?mk_individual_id_t=317 Yitzhak Berman: Particulars] Knesset </ref> He studied at a teacher training college in [Jerusalem](/source/Jerusalem), before studying to be a lawyer in [London](/source/London).<ref name=P/>

In 1939 he joined the [Irgun](/source/Irgun) and worked in the organisation's intelligence department. In 1941, during [World War II](/source/World_War_II), he enlisted in the [British Army](/source/British_Army) and served in intelligence. He also served in the [Israel Defense Forces](/source/Israel_Defense_Forces) between 1948 and 1950, fighting in the [1948 Arab-Israeli War](/source/1948_Arab-Israeli_War).

In 1950 he began work as the legal advisor of the Kaiser-Fraizier Factory in [Haifa](/source/Haifa), becoming Director General by the time he left in 1954.<ref name=PA>[https://www.knesset.gov.il/mk/eng/mk_eng.asp?mk_individual_id_t=317 Yitzhak Berman: Public Activities] Knesset</ref> In 1951 he joined the [General Zionists](/source/General_Zionists) and became chairman of the party's [Tel Aviv](/source/Tel_Aviv) branch in 1964. In 1974 he became chairman of the party's national secretariat,<ref name=PA/> and in [1977 elections](/source/1977_Israeli_legislative_election) was voted into the [Knesset](/source/Knesset) on the list of [Likud](/source/Likud) (of which the General Zionists had become a faction). After being re-elected in 1981 he was appointed Minister of Energy and Infrastructure in [Menachem Begin](/source/Menachem_Begin)'s government. However, he resigned from the post on 30 September 1982 due to the government's attitude towards the [Kahan Commission](/source/Kahan_Commission), which was investigating the [Sabra and Shatila massacre](/source/Sabra_and_Shatila_massacre).

Berman lost his seat in the [1984 elections](/source/1984_Israeli_legislative_election). In 1986 he was amongst the founders of the Centre Liberal Party, and the following year was one of the founders of the Centre Party (unrelated to the later [Centre Party](/source/Centre_Party_(Israel))).

He lived his last years in a [retirement home](/source/retirement_home) in [Tel Aviv](/source/Tel_Aviv).
