**Yangzhou opera** ([Chinese](/source/Chinese_language): 扬剧; [pinyin](/source/Pinyin): *Yángjù*; lit. '*Yang opera*') is a form of [Chinese opera](/source/Chinese_opera) from [Yangzhou](/source/Yangzhou) in [Jiangsu](/source/Jiangsu) province. Its popularity has spread to [Zhenjiang](/source/Zhenjiang) and [Nanjing](/source/Nanjing) in [Jiangsu](/source/Jiangsu), as well as [Shanghai](/source/Shanghai) and parts of [Anhui](/source/Anhui) province.[1] It made the first national [intangible cultural heritage](/source/Intangible_cultural_heritage) list in 2006.[2]

Its origins dates to the [Kangxi Emperor](/source/Kangxi_Emperor)'s reign. In the beginning, it had only two character types, a clown ([Chou role](/source/Chou_role)) and a woman ([Dan role](/source/Dan_role)). It has more character types now, but still only two singing styles, male and female.[3]
