**Yan Valery** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): يان فاليري; born 22 February 1999) is a professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [right-back](/source/Right-back) for [EFL League One](/source/EFL_League_One) club [Sheffield Wednesday](/source/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C.). Born in France, he plays for the [Tunisia national team](/source/Tunisia_national_football_team).

He began his senior career in England with [Premier League](/source/Premier_League) club [Southampton](/source/Southampton_F.C.) and spent the second half of the 2020–21 season [on loan](/source/Loan_(sports)) at [Championship](/source/EFL_Championship) club [Birmingham City](/source/Birmingham_City_F.C.) before joining Angers in 2022. In international football, he represented his native [France at under-17](/source/France_national_under-17_football_team) and [under-18 levels](/source/France_national_under-18_football_team) before switching to his mother's country of [Tunisia at senior level](/source/Tunisia_national_football_team) in 2022.

## Early life

Valery was born in [Champigny-sur-Marne, France](/source/Champigny-sur-Marne%2C_France) to a [Martiniquais](/source/Martinique) father and [Tunisian](/source/Tunisian_people) mother.[4] He is a [Muslim](/source/Muslims).[5]

## Club career

### Southampton

Valery joined [Southampton](/source/Southampton_F.C.) in 2015 from [Rennes](/source/Stade_Rennais_F.C.).[6] On 27 November 2018, Southampton boss [Mark Hughes](/source/Mark_Hughes) handed Valery his first team debut in an [EFL Cup](/source/EFL_Cup) match against [Leicester City](/source/Leicester_City_F.C.).[7] Four days later, he made his league debut, playing the whole match in a 2–2 draw against [Manchester United](/source/Manchester_United_F.C.).[8]

On 2 March 2019, Valery scored his first Southampton goal in a 3–2 defeat away to [Manchester United](/source/Manchester_United_F.C.), opening the scoring with "an outstanding finish".[9] The week later, Valery scored again in a 2–1 win at home to [Tottenham Hotspur](/source/Tottenham_Hotspur_F.C.).[10] Valery ended the season with a total of 23 appearances.[11] At the end of the season, Valery was voted as 'Saints Young Player of the Season'.[12]

Despite this, the [2019–20 season](/source/2019%E2%80%9320_Southampton_F.C._season) would be tough for Valery, who only made a total of 11 starts for Southampton.[11] Valery later revealed that he had [glandular fever](/source/Glandular_fever) which kept him out for a significant part of the season.[13] The arrival of [Kyle Walker-Peters](/source/Kyle_Walker-Peters) from Tottenham Hotspur, initially on loan, made it harder for Valery to get back into the Southampton first team.[14]

On 26 January 2021, Valery made his first Premier League start of the season in Southampton's 3–1 defeat to [Arsenal](/source/Arsenal_F.C.).[15]

#### Loan to Birmingham City

On 1 February 2021, Valery joined [Championship](/source/EFL_Championship) club [Birmingham City](/source/Birmingham_City_F.C.) for the remainder of the 2020–21 season.[16] He made his debut five days later as a late substitute in a 3–2 loss away to [Bournemouth](/source/AFC_Bournemouth),[17] and replaced [Maxime Colin](/source/Maxime_Colin) in the starting eleven for the next fixture, another defeat.[18] He made seven appearances (two starts) in the early part of his loan spell but had no matchday involvement after [Lee Bowyer](/source/Lee_Bowyer) took over as head coach in mid-March.[19][20]

### Angers

On 1 September 2022, Valery joined [Ligue 1](/source/Ligue_1) club [Angers](/source/Angers_SCO) on a four-year contract.[21]

### Sheffield Wednesday

On 21 June 2024, Valery returned to England, signing for [Sheffield Wednesday](/source/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C.) for an undisclosed fee.[22] He made his Wednesday debut against [Plymouth Argyle](/source/Plymouth_Argyle_F.C.) on 11 August 2024, starting the game in a 4–0 victory.[23] He scored his first goal for Wednesday away at [Middlesbrough](/source/Middlesbrough_F.C.) on Boxing day, scoring the equalising goal after Wednesday went 3–0 down.[24]

#### Loan to Young Boys

On 9 February 2026, Valery joined [Swiss Super League](/source/Swiss_Super_League) side [Young Boys](/source/BSC_Young_Boys) on loan for the remainder of the season, without the option to buy.[25][26]

## International career

Valery has represented France at both [under-17](/source/France_national_under-17_football_team) and [under-18](/source/France_national_under-18_football_team) level.[27] In January 2019, he met with Tunisia manager [Alain Giresse](/source/Alain_Giresse) and agreed to play for the [Tunisia national team](/source/Tunisia_national_football_team).[28]

In September 2022, Valery accepted a call-up to play for Tunisia in [friendlies](/source/Exhibition_game#International_friendly) against [Comoros](/source/Comoros_national_football_team) and [Brazil](/source/Brazil_national_football_team) in preparation for the [2022 FIFA World Cup](/source/2022_FIFA_World_Cup).[29] He made his debut as a late substitute in the 5–1 loss to Brazil on 27 September.[30] He was called up to the Tunisia squad for the [2025 Africa Cup of Nations](/source/2025_Africa_Cup_of_Nations) held in [Morocco](/source/Morocco).[31]
