**XnView** is an [image organizer](/source/Image_organizer) and [general-purpose file manager](/source/File_manager) used for viewing, converting, organizing and editing [raster images](/source/Raster_image), as well as general purpose file management. It comes with built-in [hex inspection](/source/Hex_editor), [batch renaming](/source/Batch_renaming), [image scanning](/source/Image_scanning) and [screen capture](/source/Screenshot) tools. It is licensed as [freeware](/source/Freeware) for private, educational and [non-profit](/source/Nonprofit_organization) uses. For other uses, it is licensed as [commercial software](/source/Commercial_software).

Although originally deployed only on [Unix-like](/source/Unix-like) systems, it is now also available for [Windows](/source/Windows), [Windows Mobile](/source/Windows_Mobile) and [Pocket PC](/source/Pocket_PC).[5] The extended version of XnView, called **XnView MP**, is available for Windows, [macOS](/source/MacOS) and [Linux](/source/Linux).[6]

XnView has received five cows from [Tucows](/source/Tucows).[7] In 2006 [Sveriges Television](/source/Sveriges_Television) (SVT) recommended XnView in their *High Definition Multi Format Test Set*.[8] Research papers about [DICOM](/source/DICOM) and [digital watermarking](/source/Digital_watermarking) used XnView for image processing.[9][10]

## Features

XnView is [customisable](/source/Personalization) and [multi-lingual](/source/Multilingualism). XnView can read more than 500 image file formats, some [audio](/source/Audio_file_formats) and [video file formats](/source/Container_format_(digital)), and write 50 image file formats.[11] XnView also supports [ICC profiles](/source/ICC_profile) in [JPEG](/source/JPEG), [PNG](/source/Portable_Network_Graphics) and [TIFF](/source/TIFF) files. It doesn't respect loop settings on animated files, however, and will infinitely loop them, regardless.[12] Classic XnView can read image formats resulting in more than [32 bits per pixel](/source/Color_depth#Deep_color_(30-bit)), but write support is limited to 32 bits.

XnView can show [IPTC](/source/IPTC_Information_Interchange_Model), [Exif](/source/Exif) and [XMP](/source/Extensible_Metadata_Platform) [metadata](/source/Metadata), and write IPTC metadata (It can also do batch writing of IPTC metadata).[13][14] It can write XMP metadata partly together with IPTC metadata. It also supports file comments ([4DOS](/source/4DOS) [descript.ion](/source/Long_filename)). XnView can search files that have the same filename or data, and can search for similar graphics as well.

The display of the [histogram](/source/Image_histogram) of a picture is possible. [Scripts](/source/Scripting_language) can be created to convert, manipulate and [rename a batch](/source/Batch_renaming) of images in one go. Creation of advanced [slide shows](/source/Slide_show) is also possible. Lossless (without new encoding) turning, [flipping](/source/Flipping) and [cropping](/source/Cropping_(image)) of JPEG files is supported.

Typical image editing tools are included, for instance color and size manipulation, several [filters](/source/Filter_(photography)) and [effects](/source/Visual_effects). XnView supports .8bf [Photoshop plugins](/source/Photoshop_plugin) such as the [Harry's Filters](/source/Harry's_Filters) 3.0 included in the full version. Support for most [raw image formats](/source/Raw_image_format) is based on [dcraw](/source/Dcraw).

Support for [vector graphics](/source/Vector_graphics) ([EPS](/source/Encapsulated_PostScript), [PS](/source/PostScript), [PDF](/source/PDF)) can be integrated with [Ghostscript](/source/Ghostscript). Classic XnView does not support [Unicode](/source/Unicode), and [SVG](/source/SVG) requires a commercial [CAD](/source/Computer-aided_design) plugin. These features are available in the multi-platform edition XnView MP based on [Qt](/source/Qt_(software)).[6]

Classic XnView is also distributed in the [PortableApps format](/source/PortableApps.com).[15] XnView 2.13 (2013) was the last version for Windows platforms older than [Windows XP](/source/Windows_XP). Version 2.30 released in 2015 supports the [Netpbm PAM](/source/Netpbm#PAM_graphics_format) format, can read [Better Portable Graphics](/source/Better_Portable_Graphics), and offers an add-on for [Imgur](/source/Imgur) uploads.[16] As of 2018 XnView also supported [HEIF](/source/HEIF) and [FLIF](/source/FLIF).[17]
