Between 2008 and 2010, she served as Senior Advisor for Communicable Diseases at the [Pan American Health Organization](/source/Pan_American_Health_Organization) in [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington%2C_D.C.), coordinating the organization's technical response to the [2009 swine flu pandemic](/source/2009_swine_flu_pandemic). Aguilera has also worked as a consultant for other international organizations, such as the [World Health Organization](/source/World_Health_Organization) (WHO), the [United Nations Development Programme](/source/United_Nations_Development_Programme) (UNDP) and the [World Bank](/source/World_Bank), in various countries in [Latin America](/source/Latin_America) and in [China](/source/China).[3] During the [COVID-19 pandemic in Chile](/source/COVID-19_pandemic_in_Chile), Aguilera became part of the National Commission for Pandemic Response, heading its External Advisory Council.[4] In this role, she criticized the former government of [Sebastián Piñera](/source/Sebasti%C3%A1n_Pi%C3%B1era) for lack of transparency in the delivery of data.[2] On 6 September 2022, Aguilera replaced [María Begoña Yarza](/source/Mar%C3%ADa_Bego%C3%B1a_Yarza) as Minister of Health in the cabinet of [Gabriel Boric](/source/Gabriel_Boric), after a cabinet reshuffle following the rejection of the proposed new constitution in the [2022 Chilean national plebiscite](/source/2022_Chilean_national_plebiscite).
