# Xi Columbae

**Xi Columbae** is a [binary star](/source/Binary_star)[1] system in the southern [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Columba](/source/Columba_(constellation)). With an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 4.97,[2] it is faintly visible to the naked eye. Based upon an annual [parallax shift](/source/Stellar_parallax) of 10.1 mas,[3] it is located around 323 [light years](/source/Light_year) from the [Sun](/source/Sun). The system is a member of the [HR 1614](/source/HR_1614) supergroup,[4] and is drifting further away with a [radial velocity](/source/Radial_velocity) of +59.5 km/s,[5]

This is an [astrometric binary](/source/Astrometric_binary)[6] with an [orbital period](/source/Orbital_period) of 1,420.6 days and an [eccentricity](/source/Orbital_eccentricity) of 0.39.[1] The primary is an [evolved](/source/Stellar_evolution) [K-type](/source/K-type_star) [giant star](/source/Giant_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of K1 III CNII,[7] showing an overabundance of [CN](/source/Cyanide) in its [spectrum](/source/Stellar_spectrum). The star has expanded to 16 times the [radius of the Sun](/source/Radius_of_the_Sun) and is radiating 120 times the [Sun's luminosity](/source/Sun's_luminosity) from its swollen [photosphere](/source/Photosphere) at an [effective temperature](/source/Effective_temperature) of 4,743 K.[3] The companion has a mass of at least 59% that of the Sun.[1]
