***X-Kaliber 2097***[a] is a 1994 [action game](/source/Action_game) published by [Activision](/source/Activision) for the [Super Nintendo Entertainment System](/source/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System).[1] It was co-developed by the Japanese studios [Fupac](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fupac&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Winds](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Winds_(company)&action=edit&redlink=1).

## Story

The game takes place in the near-[anarchic](/source/Anarchy) future of the year 2097, in which the world's [economy](/source/Economy) has been devastated, governments have collapsed, and [organized crime](/source/Organized_crime) has gained dramatic influence. The player guides a swordsman named Slash through a [side-scrolling](/source/Side-scrolling_video_game) environment.

## Gameplay

[Boss](/source/Boss_(video_gaming)) encounters take place as one-on-one matches in the style of [versus fighting games](/source/Versus_fighting_game).

## Soundtrack

*X-Kaliber 2097*'s American soundtrack features tracks by [electronic](/source/Electronic_music)/[industrial music](/source/Industrial_music) group [Psykosonik](/source/Psykosonik) and arranged for Activision by Ali Lexa. Psykosonik's soundtrack became a prominent part of the game's [marketing](/source/Marketing), and was often [plugged](/source/Product_placement) in marketing blurbs.[2] The soundtrack is also mentioned on the [game packaging](/source/Video_game_packaging), and has its own section in the game manual.

The Japanese version features music by [Hitoshi Sakimoto](/source/Hitoshi_Sakimoto) and [Hayato Matsuo](/source/Hayato_Matsuo), as well as a completely different storyline and script (with different names for every character) compared to the ones that were given in the English localization of the game.
