Born in Hangzhou, Wu took up tennis at a young age.[8]

## Junior career

In 2017, Wu reached the semifinals in both boys' [singles](/source/2017_Australian_Open_%E2%80%93_Boys'_singles) and [doubles](/source/2017_Australian_Open_%E2%80%93_Boys'_doubles) at the [Australian Open](/source/2017_Australian_Open), and won both the boys' [singles](/source/2017_US_Open_%E2%80%93_Boys'_singles)[9] and [doubles](/source/2017_US_Open_%E2%80%93_Boys'_doubles) events (with Chinese Taipei player [Hsu Yu-hsiou](/source/Hsu_Yu-hsiou)) at the [US Open](/source/2017_US_Open_(tennis)), thus became the first Chinese male to win a Grand Slam Junior title.[10] Following the Junior US Open title, Wu reached an [ITF](/source/International_Tennis_Federation) junior combined ranking of world No. 1 on 11 September 2017.[11]

## Professional career

### 2017–18: ATP and Masters 1000 debuts, first ATP Tour win

In October 2017, Wu received another wildcard and made his Masters debut at the [Shanghai Masters](/source/2017_Shanghai_Rolex_Masters), losing to [Gilles Simon](/source/Gilles_Simon) in the first round.[12] In 2018, he recorded his first ATP win against compatriot [Li Zhe](/source/Li_Zhe_(tennis)) at the [Shanghai Masters](/source/2018_Shanghai_Rolex_Masters). In the second round, he lost against eight seed and No. 1 Asian player [Kei Nishikori](/source/Kei_Nishikori) in three sets.[13]

### 2022: Historic major debut, top 125

In 2022, Wu won three Challenger titles in the United States, including back-to-back trophy runs in July in [Rome](/source/2022_Georgia's_Rome_Challenger), Georgia and [Indianapolis](/source/2022_Indy_Challenger), Indiana. As a result, on 25 July, he reached the top 200 at a career-high of No. 174.[14] His four career total Challenger titles made him the most decorated Chinese player in the circuit's history.[15]

At the [US Open](/source/2022_US_Open_(tennis)), Wu qualified to make his major debut.[16] He became the first male Chinese in the [Open Era](/source/Open_Era) to qualify at the US Open, winning his last qualifying match before [Zhang Zhizhen](/source/Zhang_Zhizhen) also won his last match later in the same day.[17][18][19][20] Wu won his first round match against 31st seed [Nikoloz Basilashvili](/source/Nikoloz_Basilashvili), becoming the first male Chinese player to win a US Open match in the [Open era](/source/Open_era) and a Grand Slam match in 63 years since Mei Fu Chi at Wimbledon 1959.[21][22] He beat fellow qualifier [Nuno Borges](/source/Nuno_Borges_(tennis)) in five sets in the second round to become the first Chinese male player to reach the third round of any Grand Slam event since [Kho Sin-Kie](/source/Kho_Sin-Kie) in [1946 Wimbledon](/source/1946_Wimbledon_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men's_singles). He also became the first Chinese man ever to reach the third round in the tournament history (since 1881).[23][24]

### 2023: First Chinese ATP champion in the Open Era, top 55

Wu started his season playing the first [Adelaide International](/source/2023_Adelaide_International_1_%E2%80%93_Men's_singles), where in qualifying, he defeated [Ugo Humbert](/source/Ugo_Humbert) but lost against [Alexei Popyrin](/source/Alexei_Popyrin). He received a wildcard into the [2023 Australian Open](/source/2023_Australian_Open_%E2%80%93_Men's_singles), where he lost against [Corentin Moutet](/source/Corentin_Moutet) in the first round.[25] Following a final showing in the [Cleveland](/source/2023_Cleveland_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles) Challenger, Wu made his debut in the top 100, at world No. 97 on 6 February 2023, becoming the second Chinese male player to do so after [Zhang Zhizhen](/source/Zhang_Zhizhen) four months earlier.[26][27]

In [Dallas](/source/2023_Dallas_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles), Wu defeated [Michael Mmoh](/source/Michael_Mmoh) in the first round, then claimed the biggest win of his career by defeating third seed [Denis Shapovalov](/source/Denis_Shapovalov) in the second round to reach his first [ATP Tour](/source/ATP_Tour)-level quarterfinal.[28] He beat [Adrian Mannarino](/source/Adrian_Mannarino) to become the first Chinese player since [Pan Bing](/source/Pan_Bing) in [1995](/source/1995_Seoul_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles) to reach an ATP Tour-level semifinal as well as the second from China to do so.[29] By defeating top seed and world No. 8 [Taylor Fritz](/source/Taylor_Fritz) in the semifinals, he became the first Chinese male ever to defeat a top 10 ranked player and to make an ATP Tour level final in the [Open Era](/source/Open_Era).[30][31][32] He went one step further to win the title defeating [John Isner](/source/John_Isner), after saving four championship points in the match, and become the first Chinese man in the Open Era to win an ATP Tour title. By doing so, he became the highest-ranked Chinese player in the history of the ATP rankings, and overtook Zhang to become the first Chinese player to enter the top 60 on 13 February 2023.[32][33] He received a wildcard for the [2023 BNP Paribas Open](/source/2023_BNP_Paribas_Open) where he defeated [Jaume Munar](/source/Jaume_Munar) for his first win at this tournament.[34] At the [2023 Miami Open](/source/2023_Miami_Open), he recorded also his first win at this Masters against [Kyle Edmund](/source/Kyle_Edmund).[1]

### 2024–25: Historic Masters third round, home semifinal, injury

Wu made his return from an injury that halted his 2023 season at the challenger in [Jinan](/source/2024_Jinan_Open_%E2%80%93_Men's_singles), where – despite being inactive for the majority of the season – he won the title, defeating [Rio Noguchi](/source/Rio_Noguchi) in the final.[35] He received a wildcard for [2024 Shanghai Masters](/source/2024_Rolex_Shanghai_Masters_%E2%80%93_Singles), and defeated [Sumit Nagal](/source/Sumit_Nagal) and 25th seed [Nicolás Jarry](/source/Nicol%C3%A1s_Jarry) to become the second ever Chinese man to reach the third round of Shanghai (after [Zhang Zhizhen](/source/Zhang_Zhizhen)),[36] where he lost against [Carlos Alcaraz](/source/Carlos_Alcaraz).[37] Wu won his sixth Challenger title at the [2025 Texas Spine and Joint Championships](/source/2025_Tyler_Tennis_Championships) in Tyler.[38] At [Washington](/source/2025_Mubadala_Citi_DC_Open_-_Men's_singles), Wu upset [Gaël Monfils](/source/Ga%C3%ABl_Monfils) and [Alexei Popyrin](/source/Alexei_Popyrin) to reach the third round as a qualifier before losing to [Daniil Medvedev](/source/Daniil_Medvedev), putting him back inside the world's top 100. During the Asian swing, he reached his first tour-level semifinal since winning his first tour-level title in Dallas in his home tournament at [Hangzhou](/source/2025_Hangzhou_Open_-_Singles) by beating [Adrian Mannarino](/source/Adrian_Mannarino), [Sebastian Korda](/source/Sebastian_Korda) and Medvedev. He lost to [Alexander Bublik](/source/Alexander_Bublik) in the semifinal. Due to more injuries, he ended his season prematurely, and finished ranked 181.

### 2026: Return to top 100, first Australian and French Open wins

Wu began his year in [Hong Kong](/source/2026_ATP_Hong_Kong_Tennis_Open_-_Singles) after receiving a wildcard. He beat [Fábián Marozsán](/source/F%C3%A1bi%C3%A1n_Marozs%C3%A1n) in straight sets, but lost to 3rd seed [Andrey Rublev](/source/Andrey_Rublev) in the second round. Wu then qualified for the [Australian Open](/source/2026_Australian_Open_-_Men's_singles), allowing him to participate in the main draw of a major for the first time since the [2023 US Open](/source/2023_US_Open_-_Men's_singles). He won his first match at the tournament, beating [Luca Nardi](/source/Luca_Nardi) in 4 sets, but lost in the second round to [Eliot Spizzirri](/source/Eliot_Spizzirri). Despite not qualifying for Delray Beach, Wu was able to continue his good form in [Acapulco](/source/2026_Abierto_Mexicano_Telcel_-_Singles) where, as a qualifier, he reached his first quarterfinal at ATP 500 level after upsetting 3rd seed [Casper Ruud](/source/Casper_Ruud) and defeating fellow qualifier [Sho Shimabukuro](/source/Sho_Shimabukuro) before losing to eventual champion [Flavio Cobolli](/source/Flavio_Cobolli) in straight sets. This result allowed him to re-enter the world's top 120.

After losing back-to-back matches at [Miami](/source/2026_Miami_Open_-_Men's_singles) and [Houston](/source/2026_U.S._Men's_Clay_Court_Championships_-_Singles), Wu won his 7th challenger title and first of the year in [Sarasota](/source/2026_Sarasota_Open_-_Singles), allowing him to return to the world's top 100 for the first time since September 2023. He continued his good challenger form in the lead-up to the French Open by reaching the quarterfinals in [Aix-en-Provence](/source/2026_Open_Aix_Provence_%E2%80%93_Singles). At the [French Open](/source/2026_French_Open_-_Men's_singles), Wu defeated [Marcos Giron](/source/Marcos_Giron) in straight sets to record his first win at the event.
