First mapped from air photos taken by [U.S. Navy Operation Highjump](/source/U.S._Navy_Operation_Highjump) and [Operation Windmill](/source/Operation_Windmill) in 1947 and 1948. Named by the [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names) (US-ACAN) for [Commissaryman Robert D. Wright](/source/Commissaryman_Robert_D._Wright), [U.S. Navy](/source/U.S._Navy), a member of the [Wilkes Station](/source/Wilkes_Station) party of 1958.
