**Wright Island** ([74°02′S 116°50′W / 74.033°S 116.833°W / -74.033; -116.833 (Wright Island)](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Wright_Island&params=74_02_S_116_50_W_&title=Wright+Island)) is an ice-covered island 35 nautical miles (65 km; 40 mi) long, lying at the north edge of [Getz Ice Shelf](/source/Getz_Ice_Shelf) about midway between [Carney Island](/source/Carney_Island) and [Martin Peninsula](/source/Martin_Peninsula), on the [Bakutis Coast](/source/Bakutis_Coast), [Marie Byrd Land](/source/Marie_Byrd_Land), Antarctica.[1]

Wright Island is on the seaward side of the eastern end of the [Getz Ice Shelf](/source/Getz_Ice_Shelf). Carney Island is to the west and [Martin Peninsula](/source/Martin_Peninsula) is to the east. [Nunn Island](/source/Nunn_Island), [Brennan Inlet](/source/Brennan_Inlet) and [Spaulding Peninsula](/source/Spaulding_Peninsula) are to the south. Features include Beyl Head, Cape Felt and Armbruster Rocks.[2]

## Discovery and naming

Wright Island was delineated from air photos taken by [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy) [Operation Highjump](/source/Operation_Highjump) in January 1947. It was amed by the United States [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names) (US-ACAN) after Admiral [Jerauld Wright](/source/Jerauld_Wright), [U.S. Navy](/source/U.S._Navy), Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet, in over-all command of the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy)'s [Operation Deep Freeze](/source/Operation_Deep_Freeze) during the International Geophysical Year, 1957–58.[1]

### Beyl Head

[74°05′S 116°31′W / 74.083°S 116.517°W / -74.083; -116.517](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Wright_Island&params=74_05_S_116_31_W_). An ice-covered headland midway on the east side of Wright Island. Named by US-ACAN in 1977 after Commander David D. Beyl, United States Navy, Operations Officer, Operation Deep Freeze 1976, with responsibility for planning the [Dome Charlie](/source/Dome_Charlie) aircraft recovery program which resulted in the successful recovery of two LC-130 aircraft damaged during Operation Deep Freeze 1975.[3]

### Cape Felt

[73°52′S 116°23′W / 73.867°S 116.383°W / -73.867; -116.383](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Wright_Island&params=73_52_S_116_23_W_). An ice-covered cape which marks the north end of Wright Island. First mapped from air photos taken by United States Navy [Operation Highjump](/source/Operation_Highjump) in January 1947. Named by US-ACAN after Admiral [Harry D. Felt](/source/Harry_D._Felt), United States Navy, Vice Chief of Naval Operations in the post 1957-58 IGY period.[4]

### Armbruster Rocks

[73°57′S 116°49′W / 73.950°S 116.817°W / -73.950; -116.817](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Wright_Island&params=73_57_S_116_49_W_). Exposed rocks on the west side of Wright Island, 9 nautical miles (17 km; 10 mi) southwest of Cape Felt. Mapped by the [United States Geological Survey](/source/United_States_Geological_Survey) (USGS) from surveys and United States Navy aerial photographs, 1959-67. Named by US-ACAN after Lieutenant Robert B. Armbruster, United States Navy, Communications Officer at Christchurch, New Zealand, Operation Deep Freeze, 1963 and 1964.[5]
