**Wouter** is a [Dutch](/source/Dutch_language) masculine [given name](/source/Dutch_given_name) popular in the Netherlands and Belgium. It is the Dutch equivalent of the English name [Walter](/source/Walter_(name)) and French name [Gauthier](/source/Gauthier), both of [Germanic](/source/Germanic_languages) origin, meaning "ruler of the army", "ruler of the forest" or "bright army".[1] Wouter is sometimes shortened to **Wout**.
