# Witherington

**Witherington** is a small settlement in [Wiltshire](/source/Wiltshire), England, in the extreme south-east of the county, a [tithing](/source/Tithing) of the [civil parish](/source/Civil_parishes_in_England) of [Downton](/source/Downton,_Wiltshire).

Although surveyed in the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) in the 11th century,[1] it is now little more than one farm. The farmhouse, built about 1700, is a [Grade II listed](/source/Listed_building#Categories_of_listed_building) building.[2]

By 1147 there was probably a church at Witherington, dependent on Downton. As the population declined it was abandoned, probably in the 15th century.[3]

When civil parishes were created in 1897, the tithing was part of the parish of [Standlynch](/source/Standlynch) with [Charlton All Saints](/source/Charlton_All_Saints). This parish was united with Downton in 1934.[3]
