# Wisconsin Highway 72

**State Trunk Highway 72** (often called **Highway 72**, **STH-72** or **WIS 72**) is a 29.44-mile (47.38-kilometre) [state highway](/source/State_highway#United_States)) state highway in [Pierce](/source/Pierce_County,_Wisconsin) and [Dunn](/source/Dunn_County,_Wisconsin) counties in [Wisconsin](/source/Wisconsin), United States. It runs in west central Wisconsin from [US Highway 10](/source/U.S._Route_10_in_Wisconsin) (US 10) and [US 63](/source/U.S._Route_63_in_Wisconsin) east of [Ellsworth](/source/Ellsworth,_Wisconsin) east to [WIS 25](/source/Wisconsin_Highway_25) in [Downsville](/source/Downsville,_Wisconsin). The road is maintained by the [Wisconsin Department of Transportation](/source/Wisconsin_Department_of_Transportation) (WisDOT).

## Route description

WIS 72 begins at an intersection with US 10 and US 63 in the [Town of Ellsworth](/source/Ellsworth_(town),_Wisconsin) in Pierce County, east of the village of the same name. From here, the highway heads east [running concurrently](/source/Concurrency_(road)) with US 63. The roads pass through a rural area together until US 63 splits off to the north. WIS 72 continues eastward, intersecting County Trunk Highway DD (CTH-DD) before entering the [Town of El Paso](/source/El_Paso,_Wisconsin). After crossing the [Rush River](/source/Rush_River_(Wisconsin)), the highway briefly follows the river's edge before continuing eastward. The road passes through the communities of [Waverly](/source/Waverly,_Wisconsin) and [Rock Elm](/source/Rock_Elm_(community),_Wisconsin), then turns northeast toward [Elmwood](/source/Elmwood,_Wisconsin). In Elmwood, the highway intersects [WIS 128](/source/Wisconsin_Highway_128) at that route's southern terminus, then turns east and leaves the village.[1] Past Elmwood, WIS 72 then enters the [Town of Weston](/source/Weston,_Dunn_County,_Wisconsin) in Dunn County. The road heads east through farmland, crossing the [Eau Galle River](/source/Eau_Galle_River) after meeting CTH-C for the first time. It then intersects CTH-D and CTH-K before entering the [Town of Dunn](/source/Dunn,_Dunn_County,_Wisconsin). The highway curves to the southeast before terminating at an intersection with WIS 25 and CTH-C in Downsville. The [Red Cedar River](/source/Red_Cedar_River_(Wisconsin)) lies immediately to the east of the terminus.[2][3]
