# Wisconsin Highway 40

**State Trunk Highway 40** (often called **Highway 40**, **STH-40** or **WIS 40**) is a [state highway](/source/State_highway_(US)) in the U.S. state of [Wisconsin](/source/Wisconsin). It runs in north–south in northwest Wisconsin from near [Elk Mound](/source/Elk_Mound,_Wisconsin) to [Radisson](/source/Radisson,_Wisconsin), passing through [Sawyer](/source/Sawyer_County,_Wisconsin), [Rusk](/source/Rusk_County,_Wisconsin), [Chippewa](/source/Chippewa_County,_Wisconsin), and [Dunn](/source/Dunn_County,_Wisconsin) counties. The largest town on its route is [Bloomer](/source/Bloomer,_Wisconsin).[1]

## Route description

WIS 40 starts at an interchange with [WIS 29](/source/Wisconsin_Highway_29). [US Highway 12](/source/U.S._Route_12_in_Wisconsin) (US 12) continues southeasterly from the interchange and runs along WIS 29 west of it. WIS 40 runs north of said interchange until reaching [Colfax](/source/Colfax,_Wisconsin), where it meets [WIS 170](/source/Wisconsin_Highway_170). The highway runs northeasterly from Coifax, passing through an interchange with [US 53](/source/U.S._Route_53_in_Wisconsin) just before running through the [city of Bloomer](/source/Bloomer,_Wisconsin). The highway meets County Trunk Highway F (CTH-F), CTH-Q, and CTH-SS within Bloomer and [runs concurrently](/source/Concurrency_(road)) with [WIS 64](/source/Wisconsin_Highway_64) along the boundary between the towns of [Woodmohr](/source/Woodmohr,_Wisconsin) and [Bloomer](/source/Bloomer_(town),_Wisconsin), just north of the city of Bloomer. The concurrency runs east for approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) before the highway runs north from it.[2]

Shortly after passing through the [community of Island Lake](/source/Island_Lake,_Wisconsin), the highway runs along or near the [Chippewa River](/source/Chippewa_River_(Wisconsin)). South of the [village of Bruce](/source/Bruce,_Wisconsin), the highway follows a short westward concurrency with [US 8](/source/U.S._Route_8). After leaving the concurrency, the highway runs northeastward to meet the Chippewa River. The highway runs along the river until shortly after it meets CTH-H north of the [Imalone](/source/Imalone,_Wisconsin) community. The highway runs north, passing through an intersection with [WIS 48](/source/Wisconsin_Highway_48) and then meets the Chippewa River again. After the Couderay River splits from the Chippewa River, the highway follows it until it reaches [Radisson](/source/Radisson,_Wisconsin), at which point the highway runs across it and terminates at [WIS 70](/source/Wisconsin_Highway_70).[2]

## Business route

**Business State Trunk Highway 40** (**Bus. WIS 40**) in [Bruce](/source/Bruce,_Wisconsin) follows the former alignment of WIS 40, after the highway was realigned in 1999.[3]
