**George Winston Roddick**, [CB](/source/Companion_of_the_Order_of_the_Bath), [KC](/source/King's_Counsel) (born 2 October 1940 in [Caernarfon](/source/Caernarfon))[1] is a [Welsh](/source/Welsh_people) [barrister](/source/Barrister), and the former [North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner](/source/North_Wales_Police_and_Crime_Commissioner). At the time he was a member of the [Liberal Democrats](/source/Liberal_Democrats_(UK)), but ran as an independent and on election resigned from the Party. Roddick was the first person to hold the post.

## Early life

Roddick was born and raised in [Caernarfon](/source/Caernarfon),[1] educated at the [Royal Naval School Tal-Handaq](/source/Royal_Naval_School_Tal-Handaq), [Malta](/source/Malta)[2] and the [Sir Hugh Owen Grammar School](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sir_Hugh_Owen_Grammar_School&action=edit&redlink=1), Caernarfon.[3]

After training and working as a [police officer](/source/Police_officer) in [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool), he undertook a law degree at [University College, London](/source/University_College%2C_London).[4][5]

## Career

### Legal career

He then trained as a barrister, appointed to the bar in 1968,[6] and then became a [Crown Court](/source/Crown_Court) recorder.[6] One of Wales's leading barristers, he [took silk](/source/Took_silk) in 1986,[6] and was appointed as the first [Counsel General for Wales](/source/Counsel_General_for_Wales) in 1998, the most senior legal adviser to the [Welsh Assembly](/source/Welsh_Assembly), during which time he advised on the creation and legislative passing of the [Welsh Language Act 1993](/source/Welsh_Language_Act_1993).[7]

### Political career

Roddick has twice stood for the [Liberal Party](/source/Liberal_Party_(UK)) unsuccessfully in Parliamentary elections: in [Anglesey](/source/Anglesey_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) at the [1970 general election](/source/1970_United_Kingdom_general_election), and in [Cardiff South and Penarth](/source/Cardiff_South_and_Penarth_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in [1983](/source/1983_United_Kingdom_general_election). He also served as Chairman of the Welsh Liberal Party in the early 1980s.[8]

#### Police and Crime Commissioner

In November 2012, he sought election as the [Police and Crime Commissioner](/source/Police_and_Crime_Commissioner) for [North Wales Police](/source/North_Wales_Police), beating Labour's Tal Michael on the second count.[7] After his election, he was criticised for running as an independent even though he is a member of the Liberal Democrats, with the [Welsh Labour Party](/source/Welsh_Labour) accusing him of 'hiding' his allegiance for political reasons.[9] Roddick stood down at the 2016 elections and the seat was won by [Arfon Jones](/source/Arfon_Jones) of [Plaid Cymru](/source/Plaid_Cymru).

### Other

In 1997, Roddick was appointed a member of the [Independent Television Commission](/source/Independent_Television_Commission)[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*], and between 2004 and 2012 was a member of the [S4C Authority](/source/S4C_Authority).[10]

## Personal life

He is a member of the [Gorsedd of Bards](/source/Gorsedd_of_Bards),[11] patron of [Caernarfon Rugby Club](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Caernarfon_Rugby_Club&action=edit&redlink=1), an Honorary Life Member of [Caernarfon Town F.C.](/source/Caernarfon_Town_F.C.) Supporters Club,[12] the Honorary President of GISDA (Gwynedd charity for homeless young people),[13] and the Vice President of the [Caernarfon Male Voice Choir](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Caernarfon_Male_Voice_Choir&action=edit&redlink=1).[14]

## Honours

Roddick was awarded the [Companion of the Order of the Bath](/source/Companion_of_the_Order_of_the_Bath) in 2003,[15] and became an Honorary Fellow of the [University of Aberystwyth](/source/University_of_Aberystwyth) in 1999.[16]
