# Winnie Li

**Wen-Ch'ing (Winnie) Li** (; born December 25, 1948) is a Taiwanese-American mathematician and a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at [Pennsylvania State University](/source/Pennsylvania_State_University).[1] She is a [number theorist](/source/Number_theorist), with research focusing on the theory of [automorphic forms](/source/Automorphic_forms) and applications of [number theory](/source/Number_theory) to [coding theory](/source/Coding_theory) and [spectral graph theory](/source/Spectral_graph_theory). In particular, she has applied her research results in automorphic forms and number theory to construct efficient communication networks called [Ramanujan graphs](/source/Ramanujan_graphs) and Ramanujan complexes.

## Professional career

Li did her undergraduate studies at [National Taiwan University](/source/National_Taiwan_University) (NTU), graduating in 1970.[1][2] At NTU, she was a classmate of other notable female mathematicians [Fan Chung](/source/Fan_Chung), [Sun-Yung Alice Chang](/source/Sun-Yung_Alice_Chang) and [Jang-Mei Wu](/source/Jang-Mei_Wu).[3] She earned her [Ph.D](/source/Ph.D). from the [University of California, Berkeley](/source/University_of_California,_Berkeley), in 1974, under the supervision of [Andrew Ogg](/source/Andrew_Ogg).[1][2][4]

Before joining faculty of Pennsylvania State University in 1979, she was a Benjamin Pierce assistant professor at [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) for 3.5 years from 1974 to 1977, and a tenure-track assistant professor at the [University of Illinois at Chicago](/source/University_of_Illinois_at_Chicago) from 1978 to 1979.[1][2] She was also the director of the National Center of Theoretical Sciences in [Taiwan](/source/Taiwan) from 2009 to 2014.[1][2]

## Awards and honors

In 2010, Li was the winner of the [Chern Prize](/source/Chern_Prize_(ICCM)), given every three years to an outstanding Chinese mathematician.[5] In 2012 she became a fellow of the [American Mathematical Society](/source/American_Mathematical_Society).[6] She was chosen to give the 2015 [Noether Lecture](/source/Noether_Lecture).[7]
